Irish Army - General Information

Irish Army
Summary
The Irish Army is charged with upholding the territorial integrity of the Republic of Ireland and protecting the borders, including possible amphibious landing zones.

History
The Irish Army (or National Army) was formed from the Pro-Treaty elements of the Irish Republican Army following the War of Independence. In its early days it was equipped by the British Army, and most armaments remained unchanged until the Irish I Brigade was deployed as part of the League of Nations Afghanistan Field Force.

Manpower
The Irish Army consists of five brigades (four infantry and one motorized) and several smaller support units. With all units at full assigned strength, the Irish Army employs 20,969 men in the active formations (plus approximately 500 men in the general staff). However, two of the infantry brigades are composed of reserves (usually II and V Brigade) and have only 25% of their manpower under arms at any given time. Two more brigades (usually III and IV Brigade) are kept at 50% of their manpower under arms. The final brigade, usually I Brigade (The Irish Guards) is kept at 75% status, and can be brought fully up to strength within 24 hours. Only the Irish Ranger Wing and two military police companies are kept at full strength at all times. This means that the Irish Army usually has approximately 10,241 men under arms in normal peacetime conditions.
