Irish Army Reforms

As part of their participation in the ongoing League of Nations deployment in Afghanistan, the Irish Army is carrying out a number of reforms which are intended to reflect their experience here.

Irish Rangers
The Army Ranger Wing is formed from a variety of different sources drawing on the experience of the Afghan Campaign. First, the assault pioneer company was formed in the aftermath of the storming of the “Castle” at Gereshk, when the Irish pulled off a series of volunteers and formed an assault company armed almost exclusively with MAB-38 SMGs. These troops are dedicated almost solely for the purpose of assaulting a fortified bunker or position. The “proper” Rangers, differing from the Assault Pioneers, were formed more in the vein of the Yugoslavian Pandurs.

The Irish lack sufficient transport aircraft and so parachute insertion is not part of the training regime at the present time.

Irish Rangers:
- 2 ranger companies: 161 men, 123 carbines, 36 Breire Guns, 12 rifle grenade launchers, 1 AT rifle, 2 60mm mortars

This seems a reasonable development in the light of Irish experience in Afghanistan.

The short-term lack of transport aircraft by the Irish Air Corps is not an absolute bar to providing some personnel with airborne training. Yugoslavia sent several small groups of personnel to Germany for airborne training and these, in turn, served as cadre when Yugoslavia obtained sufficient transport aircraft to develop its own training program. I am certain that Ireland could call on a Commonwealth or other friendly nation if it chose to follow this line of thought.

The high number of Breire LMGs is notable; fortunately, the Breire is not an overly heavy weapon and certainly provides massive quantities of firepower in a quick firefight. I like the inclusion of shotguns as a breeching weapon; I don't recall other powers having included such in their armory.

Overall, very thoughtful.

Thank you. :)

While the shotguns are intended to serve as breaching weapons (hence why every assault team gets at least one), it's also intended as a personal weapon as well. There's just something about those big gaping muzzles, the eighteen-inch sword bayonet, and the "schock-schock" sound of working the action that helps to scare the bodily fluids out of your enemies; and that's naturally a desirable trait in your enemy. ;)

Although the Irish motorized one of their infantry battalions (with ACW-IPs) in 1940, this was initially a fairly informal change. The utility of these motorized troops was proven in Afghanistan, and a formal organization was developed to establish them.

The "leg infantry" battalions will additionally be brought up to a very similar standard, but will lack the infantry carriers.

Of all the branches of the Irish Army, the artillery branch is closest in doctrine to the British, using quite a lot of British-built gear and using it according to the latest British methods. This means that, like the British artillery, the Irish artillery isn't noted for pinpoint accuracy but does have an outstanding call-for-fire response time. This capability was very well-liked by troops during the Afghanistan deployment.

Unlike the infantry which will remain divided between motorized-mounted and unmounted, the Irish Army intends to motorize all of their artillery battalions to this standard by the end of 1941. They fortunately only have five battalions to motorize...

The Irish Armoured Regiment

The Irish Cavalry Corps has, rather uniquely, always been a fully-mechanized unit from its inception, starting off as the Armoured Car Corps in 1922. Throughout the 1930s it expanded to include a number of interrelated units equipped with tanks and armoured cars... and sometimes not equipped at all, but we shan't dwell on that! Suffice to say, it's clear from experience that the Irish armoured units cannot be effective unless they see some changes, which shall happen by forming all the various scattered units into an official armoured regiment.

Before someone goes off half-cocked with "the Irish have an armoured regiment?!", please note that Ireland already has most of the required number of tanks in service right now, and the use of the term "regiment" is applied according to the British style of British armoured units.

It is interesting that you chose to include 81mm mortars in the troop table for the armoured regiment. The US Mechanized Cavalry regiments of the interwar period incoporated substantial numbers of machineguns and mortars in their support squadrons. The theory was that the machineguns would be needed to defend the tank laagers at night from dismounted attack, and the mortars to fire smoke to mask an attack.

The Yugoslav armoured regiment follows the US doctrine far more closely than a European model, incorporating infantry elements as well to provide immediate support for the tanks. I think the Irish regimental organization is a good compromise given the small size of the Irish Army overall.

Of course, should the day come that the Irish Army decides to expand its armored force, it might be more viable at that point to split the tanks and armoured cars into separate units.

And here's the Motorized Infantry Brigade. There's only one of these, organized around the Irish I Brigade which went to Afghanistan. The four other Irish brigades have regular infantry rather than motorized infantry, and they naturally lack the Armoured Regiment. An all-army order-of-battle will follow.

Here is the revamped order-of-battle for the entire Irish Army.

The Irish Army is divided into "Deployable" and "Not Deployable" units. Deployable units are available for League of Nations-sanctioned missions, either as a lone unit or as a component to a larger force. Not Deployable units are... you guessed it, not available for League deployments. With the conclusion of the Afghanistan deployment, the following units will be designated Deployable (after they have had sufficient time for rest, re-training and re-equipping):
- I Brigade
- Irish Ranger Wing
- 2nd Military Police Company
- 6th Engineer Field Squadron
- 6th Brigade Support Troops

Deployable-rated units are always to be maintained even in peacetime at full manpower. In general, at least two and as many as three of the five brigades are at partial strength at any given time. In peacetime, therefore, the Irish Army generally maintains between 10 to 15 thousand soldiers in uniform at any given moment.

It ought to be noted that between 1938 and 1940, Ireland had thirty infantry battalions, though a significant number of them were composed of reservists. With this army reform, some battalions will be demobbed and their standing personnel will be absorbed by other units. For example, the Irish Ranger Wing will be formed around the cadre of the demobilizing 5th Infantry Battalion.
