Sonderverband (Special Unit) 288 (Heer)

This specialist intervention force was organised in the autumn of 1940 under the command of Major (now Oberstleutnant, Fritz Bayerlin) as a rapid-reaction intervention force. It has a special establishment, incorporating motorised infantry, reconnaissance, panzergrenadier and assault artillery elements in one organisation. In overall strength it approximates two battalions, but is highly mobile due to its organic motor transport. Should a friendly nation call upon Germany for military assistance, Sonderverband 288 would be among the first units to be deployed.
