You can still create your own pattern, but you do it in a large block without having to worry about any lines that are in the way and once that is done, you paste the vehicle on top of it. I am a bit more lazy, so I use existing patterns from the internet.

Messing around with that camouflage pattern and the pic of some French tank.

The top of the pattern matches the bottom so I can stick a few on top of each other. Did the same for the tank and dumped it on top of the pattern, so eventhough the pattern of the tanks is the same, all six tanks are different.
