A significant milestone in military cooperation between members of the Warsaw Pact was accomplished today as the first twelve examples of the new 75mm M1940 Divisional Gun were prepared for shipment to Romania, where they will become one of that service’s newest weapons. Romania has ordered an unspecified number of weapons of this type from the Zastava Ordnance Works as well as acquiring a licence for the manufacture of the M1940 by domestic Romanian factories. Accompanying the first shipment were a number of technicians from the Zastava Works, who will assist their Romanian counterparts at the Uzinele de fer si Domenille din Resita in establishing new production facilities there.

The latest reports from the Mixed Commission reviewing the contending claims in the Eastern Provinces indicate that plebiscite voting has been scheduled for the period 5-7 November 1940.

Despite increasing output from the Zastava Truck Factory the Government announced today that it will continue its programme of vehicle purchases abroad – indicating that follow-on orders were place with the Tatra works in Czechoslovakia for additional examples of the T93 light lorry and its T110 heavy lorry, with the Hungarian firm of Botond and with the Swiss Saurer firm. It appears that no further procurement of American-made lorries is anticipated at this time.

The results of the recently-concluded plebiscite were formally delivered to the Mixed Commission today. While the official results have yet to be announced voter turnout in all districts was heavy. The proceedings were unmarred by violence and observers have commented favourably on the absence of vote fraud or intimidation by any party.


Belgrade, Friday, 15 November 1940

Minister without Portfolio Boris Furlan delivered a speech to the press regarding the recently concluded plebiscite in the Eastern Provinces.

“Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to announce the recommendation of the Mixed Commission regarding the solution of the conflicting claims of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia in the region of the Eastern Provinces. The commission recommends that the border municipalities of Bosilegrad and Tsaribrod be transferred to the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Bulgaria, with all other territories remaining Yugoslav territories. Residents throughout the contested territories may freely emigrate if they so wish, and shall be assured of full citizenship and civil rights should they choose to remain. It is the hope of the Commission, and my own, that this proposed settlement will be accepted by both Governments, and may be the basis for a final solution to the disagreements between Yugoslavia and her eastern neighbor.”
