Blohm und Voss Bv146 Troop and Cargo Carrier



Technical Description

High wing cantilever monoplane. Centre portion of wing to points just outboard of outer engine nacelles of parallel chord, outer potions tapered. Two spar, stressed skin light alloy construction. Slotted light alloy flaps. Mass balanced light alloy ailerons. Electric de-icing equipment fitted.

Fuselage of all metal semi-monocoque stressed skin structure.

Cantilever monoplane type tail unit. Single piece tailplane, two identical elevators, single fin and rudder, all of stressed skin light alloy construction.

Retractable tricycle type undercarriage. Pneumatic retraction. Electro-hydraulic oleo pneumatic shock absorbers. Low-pressure tyres for rough-field handling

Two BMW Flugmotorenbau 801MC fourteen-cylinder two-row radial air-cooled geared and supercharged engine in low-drag cowling with induced fan cooling, rated at 1,750 hp for takeoff. VDM three-bladed constant speed fully feathering airscrews. Fuel in four interconnected crash proof tanks, two in each wing. Inboard tanks 437 litres each, outboard tanks 518 litres each; total fuel capacity 1910 litres. Two oil tanks, one in each nacelle, 75 litres gallons each.

Accommodation for pilot, navigator and wireless operator in cabin in the nose of the aircraft; dual controls fitted. Main cabin can be configured to accommodate up to twenty-eight troops in bench seats, twenty fully-equipped paratroops or, if fitted with airline-style seats, twenty-two passengers. The floor of the aircraft is strengthened for heavy freight loads of up to 3,500 kg and fitted with tie-down points. A large freight door is fitted on the port side of the aircraft.

Wing span 27 metres; length 21.8 metres, height 5.94 metres. Wing area 88 square metres.

Empty weight 8,200 kg; normal load 13,500 kg.

Maximum speed at 5,000 metres 470 kph. Cruising speed 440 kph. Maximum range 1,550 kilometers.

Sweet. Kind of reminds me of the An-8/10 mixed with a Vickers Valetta.

Unfortunately its development was out-of-cycle with the Argentine transport RFP. :(

However, if the Royal Air Force would like to evaluate a demonstrator, such can be arranged. :D

First prototype is expected to fly in the early spring of 1941; probably some time in late March/early April. Given the use of a proven airframe, problems are not anticipated but the future is always uncertain.
