Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily

Space for 32 aircraft, along with 4 spares at 25 tons each.

110 tons reserved for command spaces and growth.

Notes:

As completed, Otto Lillienthal does not have the above listed belt armor or any weapons, and the main hangar deck is a vast empty space separated from the training hangar by a 15mm steel partition. There are structural provisions for an aft elevator, but the deck would need to be cut to install it. The engine rooms are all in place, as are all the engines, but the engine controls are arranged such that only 1 engine set (3 steam, 1 diesel) can drive the electric motors at a time. The ship is fitted with cast lead weights in place of the belt armor, to simulate the weight of belt armor, and there are ballast blocks alongside the flight deck to simulate weapons mountings.

So, as completed, she has space in her hangar for only 2 aircraft, no weapons, no belt armor, and a top speed of only 21.4 knots (on one of her steam plants).

Otto Lillienthal – Laid down Jan 1933; launched Sep 1933; completed Jun 1934; Scrapped Jan 1947

(Historical Schnellboot 1939 boat design, with engines from historical Schnellboot 1937 design and modified armament)

Fifty-two boats of this type, numbered S7 – S58, were delivered to the Kriegsmarine; fifty remained in service as of December 1940. Two boats, S7 and S8, were sold to the Bulgarian Navy in the first quarter of 1940.

A further twelve boats were sold to France in the second quarter of 1941, leaving thirty-eight vessels remaining in service.

In July 1947 sixteen boats of this type were sold to the Latvian Navy and eight to the Lithuanian Navy.

The remaining fourteen boats were expended as targets.
