4e Groupement Aérien de Porte-avions
Ship: Not deployed afloat
Shore Base: Toulon
Date formed: 1933, reforming 1940
Assigned Strength: Not yet available.
Constituent Units: Not yet available.

~~NOTES~~

- The converted carrier Suffren, being converted as a pilot training ship, does not have a Groupement assigned, with training units assigned by flotilles on an as-needed basis.
- Equipment as of Q4/1940 is shown.
- Upon the Force de Raid's return to Toulon following the Indochina deployment, the flotilles will begin converting to new aircraft types becoming available in 1941: the Bloch MB.1050 Milan and the Breguet Br.890 and Latécoère Late-550 Épaulard. Squadrons will be withdrawn and re-equipped as aircraft become available. The 4e Groupement, being in France while the Force de Raid is deployed, will probably be the first to receive new aircraft.
- The carrier L'Ocean, which completes in Q1/1941, will receive a Groupement upon her completion.

Here's a helpful list of French fighter strength as of January 1941. Throughout 1941, a number of G.C.s equipped with older aircraft are undergoing operational conversion to the new VG.60 Revenant and the Dewoitine D.525 Bourrasque . Due to the D.525's slightly longer range, it has received priority to re-equip the units of the ZOAI and ZOAPO commands.

Bombers, transports, etc in a bit.

So you are saying, at the 1st of January the French airforce fields 3572 fighter aircraft at a time?

So 2310 bombers total in service? These are not production numbers that would lead to a much lower in service rate due to tear and wear?

No, those are the totals of the stated strength of the various groups and squadrons, as I've noted elsewhere. These are the numbers the French conduct procurement to, not the numbers of what they have. I could calculate attrition rates on a per-quarter or per-year basis, but that's a lot more work than I want to go into.

Actual "line strength" is generally about 60-70% the procurement numbers - refer to the top post for how those numbers play out. As an example, for every Groupe de Chasse (G.C.), their are three squadrons of sixteen combat aircraft (48x planes) plus spares, which leads to the procurement numbers of 76x planes per G.C. The older the equipment in any given Groupe or Escadron, the less likely they are to have spare aircraft. With 45x G.C.s and 33 G.B.s, bottom-line strength would be around 2160 fighters and 1848 bombers, top-line strength would be 3572 fighters and 2310 bombers, and would fluctuate widely according to spares available, etc.

So it's quite inaccurate to say that they're all "in service" at any given time. It would be more accurate to say "France has, had, could have, or could have had up to X many aircraft in service." ;)

Well, if that is true - what is the added value of posting those numbers at all? ?(

I don't understand what you're trying to ask. Please elaborate?

If your message is "France has, had, could have, or could have had up to X many aircraft in service" the reader cannot be sure what is actually true, what the provided values actually stand for. So I wonder what the added value is of posting them at all.

IMHO, There's not really any point of posting this if I don't provide general numbers. So I'm afraid I still don't understand your question: how can posting the general numbers *not* be of value? I suppose I could generate serial numbers for all of my planes, calculate yearly attrition rates, and individually identify all the aircraft lost in accidents or written off due to maintenance issues. I didn't want to go into all that work, but if you think I ought to provide more detailed and exact information, I suppose I could figure something out...

No, that´s still not what I meant.

For example, you posted numbers for your fighters. For me, that read as if those where total numbers of front line units in service - because the headline says so. "In service" means to me, you can always put a pilot in and off the runway. So the number of planes in service is the number of planes a potential enemy has to face.

Bu then you state that your values only provide what France has or had or could have or whatever. So as a reader I´m lost as to what your numbers actually represent. Hence they are of little value to me. What´s the point in posting numbers every reader can or has to interpret by himself?

Ah, I think I see what you mean, now. Let me explain my methodology and that should tell you why I don't think I can provide you with the answer I feel you're looking for.

I started by defining unit sizes for the basic fighter and bomber units - the escadrilles. A fighter escadrille has four fighter planes and pilots, and a bomber escadrille has three planes and air crews. That's the bottom-line bare-bones building-block unit of the AdlA.

Four escadrilles plus a number of spare aircraft and aircrews make an escadron. In general, that means sixteen fighter aircraft or twelve bomber aircraft, plus four to six spares. I called it twenty fighters or eighteen bombers per escadron. The spare aircraft and pilots are intended to keep the escadron up to strength during the initial days of combat, ensuring that there are always sixteen working fighters and twelve working bombers in an escadron. This may involve using some of the spare planes as sources of spare parts, or using them as supplements for planes lost in combat.

The Groupe is composed of three escadrons - so a total of forty-eight fighters or thirty-six bombers. Two liaison aircraft are attached to the groupe in order to provide transport for senior officers. Additionally, more spare aircraft (fighters or bombers) are attached to the groupe to allow the Groupe to replenish losses amongst escadrons that become depleted of spare aircraft. The Groupe also has an undefined quantity of pilots to replace KIA, injured, missing, or fatigued pilots in the escadrons.

I procure and equip aircraft at the Groupe level. When I decide to equip a new Groupe de Chasse, I order seventy-six aircraft to fully fill out both the front-line spots and the reserve aircraft slots. Groupes are always equipped as a unit, with planes of the same type, for this reason: uniformity of training, parts, etc.

Because I was not playing France prior to 1940, I have no data regarding the quantities of aircraft manufactured before then. I did all my research and put together a list of all the historical Armee de l'Aire units of the period (I redeployed them slightly and added a number of units for Indochina, due to the greater threat levels there). That gave me a list of all the Groupes I had in total, which I published earlier this year (see above). At that time, I was aiming at building the skeleton of the Armee de l'Aire so people knew the rough-and-ready numbers of what I had in total: so I just broke everything down by Zone and listed the number of Groupes de Chasse, Groupes de Bombardement, etc. Please note that I simultaneously posted the unit compositions of the main combat types.

As I've since had more time and opportunity to look at the Armee de l'Aire, I've worked out the designation of the individual Groupes; I've also generated rough order-quantity estimates of the older aircraft types (MS.406, D.520s, MB.152s, etc). For the sake of simplicity, I decided to presume that (due to the lack of pre-1940 data), the Groupes were constituted according to my method, and equipped accordingly with 76x fighters or 66x bombers total. I also presumed that those numbers would drop due to attrition, and would vary from day to day based on the maintenance situation in the squadrons. I finally presumed that if a groupe converted up to newer aircraft, then their old planes would be redistributed to groupes still equipped with that aircraft, thus replacing any aircraft they lost due to attrition.

The posts I made last evening were intended to share the groupes' designations and their approximate equipment list. As I have no past production quantities for French aircraft, and I have no wish to invent them out of thin air, and have no wish to calculate the natural attrition of units that I'm trying to re-equip with new aircraft anyway, I simply stated their maximum "paper" strength. When I put together the "Aircraft in Service" list to append to my post - a late addition - I merely took the number of active groupes equipped with the type of aircraft and multiplied by the number of aircraft ostensibly assigned per groupe.

A number of aircraft theoretically assigned to those groupes have likely been written off, either through crashes, maintenance scrounging, or some other factor. At the same time, there's likely quite a few serviceable aircraft which are theoretically out of service but could still be brought back into service if required. The number of aircraft actually *existing* may be higher than the numbers I listed, or lower than the numbers I listed. Unless I go to the massive trouble of calculating attrition rates for every type of aircraft I have, and backdating French aircraft production numbers to 1935 or so, I cannot give you perfectly exact numbers for any of the aircraft in the French order of battle. I feel the numbers I have listed constitutes sufficient information given the constraints of IRL time to work on this.

Does all that make sense? :)
