Téméraire class, French Heavy Cruiser laid down 1940
The Téméraire was planned as the replacement for the old cruiser Suffren, which was undergoing a major rebuild into a training aircraft carrier. A second vessel of the Téméraire-class, alternately named Guerriere or Sans Souci, was planned for 1941 as a replacement for the Amiral Charner, which was scheduled for the same refit as the Suffren. However, both the Charner's refit and the second Téméraire-class ship were cancelled due to financial reasons. The Téméraire would prototype many of the design techniques and technologies which would appear on later cruiser designs of the 1940s.

Jean Bart class, French croiseurs lourds laid down 1942
Developed as a variant of the earlier Téméraire class heavy cruisers, the two Jean Bart class cruisers exchanged four triple 20cm guns for three triple 24cm guns developed for the Dunkerque and Paris class battlecruisers. The Jean Barts were well-liked ships, due in no small part to their roominess and the level of attention paid to crew comforts such as air conditioning. One unique feature on the ships was the addition of a retractable Voith-Schneider propeller in the bow, capable of providing power for low-speed maneuvering in deeper harbors.

Redoubtable class, French Heavy Cruiser laid down 1943
The two Redoubtable class heavy cruisers draw their existence from their immediate 20cm-gunned predecessor, the much larger Téméraire class. In 1940, the Marine Nationale ordered two examples of the class, complete with four brand-new 200mm/L55 triple turrets each, as well as sixteen barrels intended for installation as coast-defense batteries. Unfortunately, the second ship in the Téméraire class, with the proposed name of Sans Souci, was delayed until 1941 and then cancelled, leaving four completed triple turrets awaiting installation.

The Direction des constructions navales proposed several alternatives for a less-expensive 12x200mm-armed cruiser intended to use the spare turrets, but the French Naval Staff requested at least two ships in the class in order to justify design expenses. After several six-gun cruisers were rejected, DCN offered a novel compromise. Two cruisers would be laid down each carrying two of the triple 200mm/L55 turrets manufactured for the Sans Souci. Eight guns intended for coast defense batteries would be placed in twin turrets manufactured using parts from the 200mm twin turrets of the heavy cruiser Suffren (converted to an aircraft carrier in 1940) as well as the standard 152mm triple turrets. These twin turrets would superfire over the triples, resulting in a unique arrangement. (The rest of the 200mm/L55 guns, eight barrels in all, would be used to rearm the heavy cruiser Nouvelle-Calédonie in 1944, and more 200mm barrels were manufactured as spares.)

The two cruisers, laid down in 1943, were substantially less expensive than the Téméraire and Jean Bart class ships that immediately preceded them, being introduced under a period of fiscal restraint.
