Flettner Fl282 “Kolibri” Helicopter

The Marineflieger has taken delivery of the first production Fl282 helicopters from the Flettner Works of Bad Tölz. They will be assigned to Bordfliegerstaffel 186, and will operate from the specially equipped fleet escort vessels of the Fifth Escort Group.



Technical Description

Fuselage is of welded steel tube, truss-type construction. Forward section with enclosed cockpit. Recess for back-type parachute in rear wall of seat. The fuselage centre-section contains the entire power plant, the outer skin of which consists of removable doors, hoods and panels. Oval cross-section. The rear fuselage is fabric-covered with a rectangular cross-section.

Rotor blades comprise a tubular steel spar with riveted-on wooden ribs and plywood skin with fabric covering. Rectangular outline with rounded tips. Blades are attached to rotor head with delta and alpha hinges. Receptacle for balance weight at end of spar. The axes of both rotors are angled outboard at 12° from the vertical. Seen from above, the right rotor rotates clockwise, the left counterclockwise.

Control Surfaces comprise a two-part horizontal stabilizer with single spar. Tubular steel spar with riveted-on wooden ribs. Plywood leading edge, fabric-covering, cantilever construction. Angle of incidence adjustable between -15° and +5° from cockpit. Rudder is of wooden construction, fabric-covered, deflection to 40°. Vertical stabilizer of wooden construction with plywood leading edge and fabric covering, bolted to fuselage frame. No ailerons.

Steerable nose wheel with oil shock-absorber leg, coupled with rudder foot pedals. Nose wheel: EC tire 350 x 150mm. Main wheels: EC tires 465 x 165mm.

Accommodation for pilot in forward enclosed cockpit. Specialised equipment includes deck-landing equipment, comprising one tether with landing cable and electrical release

One BMW 314E of 160hp, compression ratio 1:6.0, rotor reduction ratio: 1:12. Lower transmission flange-mounted on front of engine, in front cooling fan on extended crankshaft. Upper transmission, linked to the lower by a double cardan shaft. Firewall over and behind the engine. An unprotected metal fuel tank located behind the firewall in the aft fuselage, consumable content 105 liters. An unprotected 10-liter metal oil tank flange-mounted on the lower gearbox. Oil content of upper gearbox = 5 litres.

Length: 6.15 metres; Width, including undercarriage and tail surfaces: 2.40 metres; Height with rotor blades removed: 2.40 metres; Rotor diameter: 12.00 metres. Maximum allowable flying weight 1,000 kg; wing loading 8.84 kg/sq.m (based on rotor surface area).

Maximum allowable forward speed 80 kph; backward 30 kph; sideways 20 kph. Aerobatics are forbidden. Rate of climb 4.5 m/sec at sea level, 3.5 m/sec at 1,000 metres, 3.0 m/sec at 1,500 metres. Maximum altitude temporarily restricted to 1,500 metres. Endurance of two hours at maximum allowable speed of 80 kph and a range of 168 km.
