These vessels were developed from bow-ramped tank landing ship proposed 1937 for the Navy. High priority for wartime call-up to serve as amphibious landing ships; Directemar and ferry lines employ Naval reservists as captain and senior officers. 83 tons to receive Major Refit to carry AA guns (3" + 40mm + 20mm), armoured bow ramp, and armoured conn.
