Cruz del Sur, Chilean Passenger Ship laid down 1940, Engines 1942
Following the completion of the Presidente-class liners, Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores continued to report record passenger numbers on their Pacific runs. The company felt a third passenger vessel to complement the Presidente and Constellacion was in order, and contracted with ASMAR for a third vessel in the class. ASMAR's designers instead offered a radical new type of passenger ship with her steam turbines in an all-aft configuration, permitting more room for the passengers. Extensive use of streamlining was used to give the ship an extremely modern appearance, much more so than her immediate predecessors. The ship, laid down in 1940, was christened Cruz del Sur.
