An effort in increase the broadside of Greek destroyers the Kondouriotis design replaced the AA gun with a 5th 5" gun. The result was not felt to be an improvement over the preceeding class and much redevelopment went into the next class of destroyers.

Destroyers of the 1930's

The E Type destroyers were built under the standard hull Epsilon Program of the late 1920's. This program sought to circumvent treaty restrictions on Destroyers. The Program E ships all have the same machinery layout, most notably, the turbines. The turbines are all of Destroyer standard, ostensibly to handle fast acceleration to counter submarines they are in fact capable of 50,000 shp - same as the Romanian Destroyers built in 1926 and reaquired in 1935. The construction of the Romanian Destroyers was to test the conversion of Type E ships. The only difference between the Romanian DD and the other E type is the fitting of the second and third boiler rooms. The E type only have the 1st Boiler room fitted. Trunking for the second is provided in the forward funnel but the 2nd and 3rd boiler rooms are occupied by cargo/storage.
