It maybe just me but most things with "Made in Japan" stamp on it look good too me.

"Ugly funnel" that many of you are labelling IJN ships, for me is grace and finesse.
Then again I like late XIX century French floating castles, so pay no attention to me or my taste in aesthetics.

Back to the topic.

Ugly is entirely relative. I for one think that the A-10 is one of the most graceful aircraft around and I used to despise the Imperial tanks from Warhammer 40K and the ships from Battlefleet Gothic, but they grow on you and now I love them.
