Junkers 390 Commercial Airliner

Junkers Flugzeug-und-Motorenbau of Dessau have released preliminary drawings of their projected Ju390 four-engined airliner.

While details were not provided at the time, it is expected that the aircraft will be capable of bridging the Atlantic and would carry at least sixty passengers.

Junkers Ju390A - Preliminary Data

The prototype of the Ju390A four-engined airliner is nearing completion at Dessau and the Junkers firm has released preliminary data for the design.

Production aircraft will be powered by four Brandenburgische Motorenbau 328 eighteen cylinder radial air-cooled engines rated at 2,100 hp for takeoff and 1,950 hp at 7,600 metres. These reflect a change from the original concept that would have seen the aircraft powered by four Junkers diesel aero engines; development problems with the latter led to the switch to the new Bramo engine.

Main compartment is equipped with fifty-eight seats, but this could be increased to seventy-two in high-density configuration; the main compartment is fitted with overhead racks for passenger luggage. All spaces will be pressurised and sound-proofed. Heating and ventilating system, full wireless equipment and air navigation equipment including Lorenz blind approach receiver, etc., will be fitted.

Span 35.8 metres; Length 32.5 metres; Height 8.66 metres. Wing area 135.75 square metres. Maximum gross take off weight 40,550 kg.

Maximum cruising speed 534 kph at 7,600 metres. Normal cruising speed 445 kph. Range with payload of 8,800 kg – 5,500 kilometres.

Looks like Chadwick has started drawing up the Tudor just in time.

It's already a relatively crowded market that the Ju 390 is trying to be launched into with the Caproni Atlante, MB.970 and Lockheed Constellation already around.

Yes, but the Atlante is a non-starter, not having enough range.

And the point is?

No problems via the Southern Atlantic route (i.e. Azores or Atlantis), or a slight increase in MTOM for additional fuel.

This is just a German vanity design.

Yes, but I doubt you've sought permissions to fly the Southern Atlantic route.

Certainly Germany has a better industry for vanity designs like the Ju290 than Italy has for the Atlante.

One could say that the Caproni Atlante is likewise a vanity design. What does that gain us? Nothing.

A whole heap of vanity. This is the golden era of flight, national vanity drives all big prestige aeronautical projects.

RA has a point, that big extra landmass lurking in the Atlantic should make trans-atlantic flights easier than OTL. Wes is going to get a lot of through traffic = tourists = money!
The Northern route via Iceland and Prestwick probably not so good at this time.

Wes, you have anticipated my plans.

I am hoping that the first revenue flight of the Ju390 will be a Christmas junket nonstop from Berlin to Cleito for a bunch of well-heeled tourists. We'll need to discuss this further. :D
