The M40 Nemanja was developed by the Novi Sad Vehicle Factory as a follow on to the M39 Lazar armoured reconnaissance vehicle to meet Royal Yugoslav Army requirements for an armoured car to serve in independent armoured cavalry regiments and in the reconnaissance elements of mechanised and armoured formations. The design shares many automotive components with the Lazar and continues the firm’s policy of exploiting Ford automotive technology. Other assistance was provided by the Czech Ringhoffer-Tatra and Poldina Hut firms.

A prototype was demonstrated in February 1940 at the Cepotina Military Cantonment and was subjected to extensive testing. Production commenced in 1940 against initial orders for two hundred vehicles, and it is expected that production will continue after completion of the initial series.

Looks like a good little vehicle. What do mean by the "field mount in turret" comment? I can't really visualise how it would work.

Probably don't need the sand plates for Yugoslav terrain...

As can be seen in the photograph here the gun is mounted inside the turrent firing through an aperture - there is no turret mantlet as on a conventional tank mounting.

For the sand plates - the artists rendering is without national markings, and, perhaps inspired by the recent sale of the Lazar armoured reconnaissance vehicle to the British Army, he is indicating the usefulness of the Nemanja in similar climes. ;)
