United States Shipping Board

One of the more interesting aspects of Wesworld history is the absence of the United States as a belligerent in the Great War. One of the outcomes of such is the likely absence of the United States Shipping Board - an entity of the US Government to build up the US merchant fleet.

The Shipping Board's operational arm, the Emergency Fleet Corporation, ordered thousands of steel and wooden merchantmen to standard designs. Norman L. McKellar's book, Steel Shipbuilding under the U. S. Shipping Board, 1917-1921, provides details of many of these vessels. A link to the online version is here.

It is all in PDF files, and many of the sketches do not seem to reproduce well, but over the years I have cleaned up a few, which I thought I would share for those who might be interested.

Details of the ships can be found in the appropriate PDF file on the Shipscribe site.

Enjoy.

Some attractive ships there, I do like 'proper' cargo ships. These modern bulkers and boxships may make good economic sense, but they don't have much soul.

Interesting.

I agree with RLBH, these have soul. Reminders of yesteryear.
