US Army Airships

The Army currently operates two rigid airships from Scott Field in Illinois: the "Bismarck" class Billy Mitchell (CR-1) and the unique metalclad George Squier (CRM-2). Congressional support for Army airships has been severely limited since they are seen as simply copying the Navy's airship missions and plans for expanding the program have been put on hold and are expected to be canceled and the two rigids will probably be transferred to the Navy. Scott Field is seen as a poor location for airships anyhow due to its location in the often turbulent Midwest and "Tornado Alley". One hanger was slightly damaged by a small twister in 1938. The Navy has made it clear that it has no intention of ever using the facilities at Scott Field due to its location and the older of the two hangers will probably be torn down to make room for a new runway while the newer hanger will remain for use by Army spotting blimps and larger aircraft.
