A large menacing shape appeared over the skies of Cheshire in the early morning gloom and sighting reports have continued to pour in from the public to the police and the RAF across the country as it headed westward. By 10am it was clear it was a huge airship and in the brighter skies later that day knowledgeable schoolboys recognised her as a Canadian Columbia Class airship and some even sharper eyed boys noticed the giant red-white-blue nose roundel and large British roundels on her flanks. It was in fact the first of two such airships built for the Fleet Air Arm, HMAS No.1 Solaria, on her delivery voyage to the Cardington sheds. Her sister HMAS No.2 Olympia is due to follow in two weeks’ time.
