German News & Events - Q1, 1939

January 5, 1939 - Berlin

With the development of more heavily armored panzers in Germany and her neighbors, the perceived need for a more powerful anti-tank gun than the current 28/20mm and 50mm models has convinced the Heer to release a request for proposals for an anti-tank gun of 75mm bore. Penetration, low silhouette, range, and low weight are all items of importance to the Heer.

The revised, static design of Rheinmetall's 12.8 cm FlaK cannon has been accepted for production. The original design, with a mobile mounting, was rejected because of excessive weight. The new design actually weighs more, but is not intended to be a mobile mounting but is instead a mounting designed to be bolted down onto a concrete pad. However, while the design has been accepted, no orders have yet been placed for this heavy gun. [This is the historical 12.8cm Flak 40.]

The Flettner Fl-282 V2 has been delivered to the KM for testing, which is expected to be conducted aboard the light cruiser Liepzig. A small platform has been installed atop Ceasar turret, and the little aircraft settled, to the delight of the small number of onlookers, onto the turret as easily as a bird landing at it's nest. The Fl-282 is the Flettner company's latest development of it's helicopter, and the small size of the aircraft makes it quite attractive to the KM. Several additional prototypes are under construction at the Flettner works, while the V1 prototype continues additional trials there.
