So, the behemoths are laid down.

Quoted

HMS Nelson Admiral Class Battleship
Laid Down 1 January 1939
Launched 1 March 1941
2,597 tons this quarter for 2,597tons
Completion due 1 June 1945

We gonna have to wait 'till '45 to see the stats?

Means....somewhere between 63,000 and 66,000 tons. Probebly a clone of those German ships...the 9x18'' ones.

I figure they're a touch bigger

but my armament calculation agrees with yours.

They won't impact Russian BB designs, since the Soyuz Nerushimy class completes in a couple of quarters, and the Slavas will launch at the end of '39, but I suppose keeping the exact details from other prying eyes is a reasonable thing to do.

But Q2/45 isn't much help against Yamatos...

Hmm...I was going by the calculation: Ship Tonnage/1000+9. Now, if Build Time is 6 years, or 72 month's, 72-9 is 63,000. But who knows, only Hood knows....

Some smart figuring going on, I knew that would happen as soon as I posted the reports. Nothing is secret when you know how much something costs per month to build. Even so the ballpark figures aren't quite correct.

The armament could either be the existing 16.5in gun (currently used in coastal defences), a totally new 18in gun or even a totally new 19in gun. Exact numbers etc I let you guys decide. I have four Admiral Class SS reports I could post and all are roughly the same displacement but differ in armour and armament. The real specs will be posted soon. Of course I could post a picture now but that might scare you all. ;)

Q2/45 won't match the Japanese battleships but will put the RN on par with the Russian, German and US fleets (all of which are allies). It will however surpass anything laid down by other nations now or for the next few years. Factor in 2-4 big carriers to complete about the same time and its clear the RN in 1945 is going to be a very powerful navy.

Could you post them? I'm sure we can help you decide if you need to....

Naw, I like the secrets. It's the way countries would actually act towards their (non-export) designs.

It's why I've started posting "public specifications" for ships that I build. Sometimes they're pretty much correct except for a few tiny exaggerations; sometimes the public specs are a bit ludicrous. :P

Jane's Frightening Slips? Like the WWI Lion class battlecruisers making 30knts with 12" armour... Usually even worse with future ships.

Even today, intelligence gathering in terms of technical specs is rather limited. In the 1930s, very very limited. Usually just gun calibre, rough size, and best guesses as to armour.

Yup, agreed. Using Springsharp we can arrive at some close guesses... sometimes. In real life it's harder to do that. I try to keep that in mind when I'm looking at the ships of neighboring powers and trying to determine the proper response.

Let's not forget that at various times in WWII, the US thought the Japanese had a third Zuikaku-class carrier. And at the Battle of Midway, the Japanese believed the USN had shown up with two XCVs converted from liners.

However 6 years 5 months is a long time to wait for a battleship. This goes for the Sachsens and Yamatos too. Soyuz Nerushimy and her sisters were laid down at about the same time as the Sachsens and they complete this year. Montanas are also pretty reasonable in terms of building time. Having the biggest BB afloat is great for prestige, but Russians like the power of the N2 Rule, and don't like to wait that long for additional firepower.

Agreed, which is why my Neptunes didn't turn out too large. I figured a ship in Iowa's ball park is more than enough and with our build rules this becomes all too aparent.

Yeah but I have 18 capital ships already, all 15in calibre and ten of them brand-new. Hardly lacking in gunpower or modernity. The rebuilds will have the latest radio-direction finding gunnery equipment and the G3's once refitted will be even more potent than they are now. I didn't start out as a prestige super-battleship but when I began adding armour, speed and range things grew and grew. Actually AdmK's and TexanCowboy's displacement estimates are on the high side, the normal tonnage is under 63,000 tons.

Since I have 4 reports I could post any one of them to confuse you all. I know which one I'm building. At the moment I'll stick to the provisional specs posted elsewhere and the picture placeholding the Admirals in the encylopedia section.

Discussing type and building time of a BB doesn´t make any sense to me except you´r up for a war. So, are you?

Otherwise one simpyl does not need to care what the RN is building. :o/

Really? Seems kinda fool hardy not to IMO.

Well when you look at the industry the British possess in Wesworld you might as well resign yourself to the fact that you'll never out build them, caring is simply irrelivent!

There isn't much variety in the new battleships being built. Pretty much all of them have the same layout, armament, armour and speed between 28 and 30knts. Only the Yamatos are significantly larger and heavier armoured. Italy is alone in sticking with 381mm guns, but with more of them instead - why mount 16" or 18" guns when you can penetrate just about anything from 30,000yds?

It doesn't particularly matter what other countries are building, the Littorios can still badly hurt anything afloat.

Well, the way I see it, there is a difference between penetrating and obliterating. :)

Shell goes bang and destroys the compartment it lands in. Not that much difference in effects between the 15" shell and the 18" shell.

Unless that compartment happens to be your charge magazine...

OTL look at Hood, Bismarck didn't have to mess around hammering away for the hours it took KGV and Rodney to sink it before it obliterated Hood with one lucky, but penetrating shot.
The longer you battle the more chance the other side gets in that lucky shot that wrecks a turret, CT, generators, boilers etc etc. Better to get it over quickly and have the better gun and armour to accomplish your aims. Better still to have five ships. :D

Also I'm still biased against qaud turrets, especially for 15in guns. Sounds like asking for trouble like PoW and KGV. When you need them most they could fail. Rather go for the tried and tested triple myself.
