If memory serves, the Enfields were presented during the British campaigns to the various Baltic nations - I think Lithuania got a bunch too. But my Mauser book says the Lithuanians ordered 15,000 Vz24s from Czechoslovakia. The author wasn't sure if they received any Latvian markings, however. Looking back at the book, the Vz24 order was later than I thought, so perhaps the Latvians just use Enfields.

It could be that Lithuania (as above) ordered a bunch of Vz.24s, while the Latvians (not mentioned above from your Mauser book) didn't. Not at all clear that in WW since there was no Bolshevik revolution that the Brits would have been donating equipment in the Baltic, though.

The carbine issue is that shorter rifles, firing full-sized rifle ammunition, recoil more and are harder to hit with than their longer, heavier cousins if they're significantly smaller (ie, some of the cavalry carbines). The US, in between the wars, came up with the M1 carbine, but that uses a much weaker, less capable round than the Garand. If they're just shorter, handier versions of a standard bolt action, there's no reason to restrict them to the Guards.

If the Guards are an assault force, you probably don't need that number of snipers (it's a high percentage for most armies of the period anyway).

Absolutely copied from Brock's designs. 27 is too much? As for the carbine, I actually view it in this case as firing pistol ammo with a larger body shaped like a rifle. Carbines are used by the rest of my forces, I just didn't mark it out.

27 is a lot for most countries, where "sharpshooters" really didn't exist between the wars.

Hmmmm. If you're using pistol ammo in a rifle-shaped weapon, you're going to need to be using something stouter than most military pistol ammunition to make it worthwhile. Something along the lines of the 7.65mm Mannlicher Carbine could be worthwhile, though.

Sorry, I meant Latvia, not Lithuania. I don't remember how many Vz24s Lithuania ordered and when they were ordered: but all Lithuanian Mausers were marked with the Columns of Gediminas.

I think there's only one or two rifle-sized weapons chambered in a pistol round at this period of time. The Destroyer Carbine (from Spain) is the only bolt-action carbine in a pistol round which I remember off the top of my head.

Carbines should be, IMHO, reserved for second-line troops like artillerymen, mortar crews, radiomen, and the like, who need a personal defense weapon and don't need the extra weight of a proper infantry rifle.

Perhaps using the Mauser C96 with the Wooden stock/holster?

Lots of Italian Beretta M18s around historically in 9x17, some fully auto and some semi-auto. In the mid 1930s the MAB-35 is introduced in semi-auto form in 9mm Fiocchi. Coupled with the long barrel, its not a bad weapon out to 200m, but fairly expensive.

Lots of other "carbines" around as well. Pretty much just shortened bolt-action rifles that are made easier to handle.

Better? I added more SLR's at the expense of carbines, and added in the Howitzer's carbines. As for carbines, Red Admiral, you're probebly right. I wonder if they have a lever action one... :D
