Bulgarian Minelayer Design Competition

This kinda came up during a chat with Wes over the IRC and I wondered if anyone would be amused at a design contest, since we haven't had any of those in a while. Soooo:

The Bulgarian Royal Navy requests interested potential contractors to submit designs for a fast minelayer meeting the following specifications:

Dimensions and Displacement:
Maximum length shall be 145 meters (475 feet) and L:B Ratio shall be no greater than 1:10. Displacement shall be 4,000 tons or less.

Armament:
- Main battery shall be three twin 105mm dual-purpose turrets (3x2) or three twin 130mm/L45 dual-purpose turrets. Guns of other sizes are not in use by Bulgaria and therefore are not preferred. At least 300 rounds per gun (and preferably 350 RPG) are specified.
- Secondary or AA weapons shall be composed of at least eight 40mm guns in raised twin mounts. Twin 88mm AA guns may be used at the designer's discretion, but are not required by this RfP.
- Miscellaneous weight for 150 Obrazets 1937 (FMO-37/950) naval mines, weighing 950kg or 2094 lbs, shall be reserved. Fewer numbers of mines shall be tolerated if the designs are exceptional in all other ways.

Propulsion:
Oil-fired steam turbines are specified, running two shafts. A high flank speed of at least 34 knots and preferably 36+ knots is required. Range shall be 1,000 nm at 27-30 knots or 5,000 nm at 15 knots.

Other Requirements:
- A transom stern is a no-no for this design. Mines shall be laid through stern chutes and doors.
- 5 tons miscellaneous weight should be reserved for hydrophones, with the option to fit DC stern racks instead of mines.
- At least 10 tons shall be reserved for electronic gear (possibly radar) to be added as topweight in 1943 or later.
- Stability shall be at least 1.10 and steadiness shall be at least 50. Seakeeping shall preferably be 1.00 or higher but some tolerance shall be permitted.
- No preference is shown for flush decks or split-decked designs.
- Torpedoes are viewed as extraneous to the stated role of this vessel and none are required.

------------------

In other words, I've spec'd an Abdiel-class minelayer. Anybody up for the challenge?

The Bulgarian Navy has one existing proposal which meets the above specifications. Should a suitable design be presented, the Bulgarian Navy will evaluate it for possible construction in late 1938 or 1938, but no order is 100% assured.

Escept for caliber size and speed your RfP is almost identincal to a fast mine layer the RSAN ordered in 1936. With minor changes - like no transome, your calibers and range - this will be a possible result. As you can see she lacks in speed compared to your requirements.

Hmm, Bulgaria's definitely interested in the HDW proposal... (but did you note the hull strength is .50 for a ship over 3,000 tons?)

Here's the design I cooked up last night:

Just throwing something out. BTW Hrolf, IIRC 0.50 is only valid for ships with a displacement less than 3000 tons. Your vessel is well over 3000 tons. Edit: Never mind, Brock already mentioned it. BTW Brock, shouldn't the l:b ratio of that design be 10:1 or less?

Eyup, it technically should - but it's only a half-foot of difference, and the 1:10 LB ratio isn't one of my ironclad demands, just a guideline. (That said, don't stray too far from the guidelines).

Here's a slightly longer, larger ship (still 1:10) with more miscellaneous weight.

Argh. Need to fix that, it was based on the latest large destroyer class I've built and just forgot that it was already right on the breakpoint for a .50 hull strength. :(

OK, here's a corrected HDW entry. The hull got a little shorter and lost a little draught (no bad thing if there are shallower waters in the region), and I had to lose a knot of speed. But the armament and stores capability stayed the same, and I even worked in some armor on the rear superstructure.

As luck would have it this spec neatly fits what was the General San Martin in Argentine service in the early 1930s. (I still miss that ship..sob...) ;(

Sooo, the Argentine Ship Designers of the Navy hunting for export cash offers a modified San Martin. You might get as many as 200-250 mines on her. After war experience with the San Martin the Argentine designers draw attention to the 130mm guns as the best standard to have. Better than the 105mm when the chips are down, at night when an enemy fast cruiser looms out of the darkness at you you need all the firepower you can get.

A good ship she was, indeed. But you gave her away for a good story arc, so that offering was worth it.

Hood - very nice ship, but I need to point out that the normal tonnage is now over 3,000 t, and therefore hull strength has to be... yeah, .75. :(

No British proposal?

Hrolf: Bulgaria will consider 150mm guns, but I feel a dual-purpose weapon is a bit mandatory on this ship because of the threat of aircraft on the Black Sea. Hence why 105mm and 130mm guns were spec'ed instead of 150mm. Though the 88s are a good addition.

The 15cm twin turrets used on this design have sufficient elevation for most AA work, and certainly time fuzes can be used with the 15cm rounds, the main issue is rate of fire at high elevations which would not be particularly good.
