The Bulgarian Army is an artillery and heavy infantry-centric army. The Bulgarian Army has participated in international operations under the League of Nations banner.

Although only the volunteer forces are currently in service and under arms, Bulgarian policy permits conscription in the event of war. In these circumstances, the Army strength can rise precipitously. The Shturmovi Otryadi are the elite of the Bulgarian infantry, designed as heavy assault units. Each Rifle Division has one battalion of Shturmovi Otryadi assigned. The stormtroops receive more automatic and semiautomatic weapons than the standard Rifle Division, as well as special weapons such as flamethrowers and other assault gear.
