Talons Over Cordoba 1938

Yes it's that time of the year once again!

The event is due to be held in August 1938 at Cordoba airport as usual.

Since we're just nuding into Q2 and I've less time these days due to work etc I'm opening the entries now and won't close them until after Xmas so you've all time to plot and plan. Feel free to post entries here or PM me. Let me know any storyline ideas, deaths etc you wish or wish to avoid. Please post full stats here of all entries so I don't have to search for them and get the wrong ones. Please include climb and weight data where possible. Pictures too are helpful for non-OTL types.

Remember, there are only 48 slots (I'd like the Swiss to return plus No1-4 are reserved for the Argentines and the RAF so thats 43 places left.

Remember, that there are only six twin-engined fighter places so please don't enter all-twin teams etc. If there is a surplus of twin-engined fighters then it'll be first come first served.

Also please read the revised rules carefully since the entry conditions have changed.

Rules

1. Any nation can enter a maximum of two fighters, that is to say the primary role of the aircraft must be to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft; they can different types or the same and may be twin-engined fighters or carrier-based fighters

2. Entries must be production machines, that is to say they must be in regular squadron service and in no way modified from the production standard. From this year all prototype and pre-production aircraft are prohibited from entry.

3. Engine tuning is allowed but the addition of superchargers is now prohibited (engines already fitted with superchargers are allowed). Fuel additives are prohibited. Special racing spec engines are prohibited. Each team can bring two engines for each aircraft entered but both must be the same model and set up identically and one engine must be a spare only and can be fitted during the main events if repair of the race engine proves impossible or impractical. It is possible to flight test the spare before the events begin.

4. No armament to be fitted, ballast to weight of guns must be added

5. All aircraft must be fitted with a radio transmitter/ receiver for safety reasons

6. Pilots must have over three years of flying experience on single-engined types, official state or company test pilots are allowed to compete but other civilian pilots are not. Rank of the pilot is not an issue.

7. All monoplanes and biplanes will compete in separate race events, all single-engined and twin-engined aircraft will compete in separate race events, all duels will also be separate but an extra Grand Final Duel will feature both types of fighter. Bombing and altitude and cross country races will be of mixed groups. Pilots will score points and these will be tallied to declare a winner.

Question on rule #2 - If the fighter in question is equipped with "fuel additives" as standard equipment (ie, MW-30/MW-50), is the use of this standard equipment banned or not?

Atlantis, Turkey and Colombia all will enter with two single fighter teams as per usual. Byzantium will enter with one twin engined fighter and if room permiting one single engine fighter.

If a fuel additive is a standard fit system then it can be used but such equipment must not be added or additives added to the standard fuel of the aircraft if the engine is not designed for it AND the judges been informed in the entry paperwork. The systems and all engines will be inspected by a panel of international judges before qualifying begins.

Germany will be sending 2 He-100s to compete, and hoping for better mechanical luck than they had last year.

The US hasn't quite decided whether to send a pair of P-41s again or to send a P-41 and a P-38. The Talons format really doesn't play to the P-38s strengths, but in a separate division it might do well enough anyway.....

He has recovered from injuries sustained in the war and was repatriated, returning to 2 Grupo. Matta has 16,000 flight hours, being qualified in Spartan Storms, Spartan Cyclones, Accrisius Aves, and now I-01-IIB Buchons, among others. He has a total of eight years flying experience. This is his first Talons appearance. Matta's I-01-IIB, named "Laura Fiora" for his wife, is brand new; the underside is painted light blue while the fuselage and upper wings are painted in a leopard-pelt pattern of orange, yellow, brown and black.

Teniente Capitan Patricio Mistral (b.1908) represents the Armada de Chile Arma Aérea (Chilean Navy Air Arm) and is flying an FMA I-01N Buchon carrier fighter named "Southern Cross". Mistral flew combat missions during the Andean War as well as the Peruvian War, scoring one aerial kill in each war. Mistral commands Escuadrón de Cazas No.3 (aka "The Black Fighters of the Armada") and serves as the executive officer of the AdCAA's III Grupo when deployed aboard the carrier Mapuche. He has 17,000 flying hours and nine years experience, and is currently the only AdCAA pilot (and one of four in Chile) who has qualified for night-fighters (which Chile doesn't have) and was the first Chilean pilot to trap on the airship Capitan Prat. Mistral's I-01N Buchon is painted black, with a red propeller spinner, red wingtips, and a red tail; a white southern cross is emblazoned on the fighter's nose and on the upper side of the wings. His B-137 is painted dark green with a red and yellow pinstripe down the sides, and red-tipped wings; the Bulgarian tricolor (white-green-red) is painted on the aircraft tail. Porucik (Senior Lieutenant) Lidiya Ivanova (b.1916) will be flying one of the latest Supermarine Spitfire MkIIs delivered to Bulgaria. Lieutenant Ivanova is second-in-command of Bulgaria's 502 Kerkenez (Kestral) squadron, and the second-highest ranked female pilot in the VNVV. Ivanova has served as a mercenary pilot in two different campaigns, scoring one kill and one probable while flying a Romanian IAR-80 fighter for the Armenian Air Force, and claiming six air kills (all Bolivian Communist Fiat Cr.32s) and several ground kills while flying a Swiss EKW D-3801 fighter named "Charity" for the Flying Legion in Bolivia (late 1937). Ivanova's identity as "Charity" however is somewhat obscured by the continued secrecy of the Flying Legion. Ivanova has three years military flying experience and five more years flying as a civilian, earning her pilot's license at age fourteen; since then she has logged approximately 14,000 hours. She is qualified on the EKW D-3801, IAR-80, Bf-109, Supermarine Spitfire (all existing marks), Kaproni Bulgarski KB-5 Tchutchuliga-III, DAR-3 Garvan (Raven), DAR-7 Koketka (Kitten), Focke-Wulf Fw-44, and Miles Master. Italy will be sending a small team this year, headed by Capt Ricco in a Macchi C.202 Serie I, which is pretty much identical to the previous year. In the meantime, the only new fighter introduced has been the C.202 Serie II, which features heavier armament, at the cost of reduced performance. Over the past year, the Air Combat Tactics School has been learning how to better fight the Folgore. The high roll rate and excellent climb rate have prompted new tactics to be formulated to better use these characteristics. These typically involve a zoom climb to retain energy and match the smaller turn radius of fighters with lower wing loading. The tactics are more challenging to form a kill solution than traditional horizontal turning fights but are much better from a defensive point of view. Mock combat with the the CR.35 and Re.2001 has been fairly successful.

At the same time, Fiat engineers are still having problems with the Centauro. Work is currently underway to design a new wing that should alleviate some of the problems.

Please keep two slots open for a SAE entry.

Following last years good experience (no trouble with the Argentine despite the war) it might happen that last years champion Endress will join the fun again. But that´s not granted. He might be needed somewhere else...

The two entries will be a F-6 and a F-8 again, much like last year. If Endress returns he will surely fly his F-6E "Deathrattler". Compared to other entries that´s an old plane but his expierience might compansate the lack of some horse power.

[In fact there is hardly anything better available. The F variant is a twin seater for training while the F-6G - first flight 06.06.37 - still has troubles with her fuel additive injection. Finally, the H variant which will become the RSAFs new standard fighter had her first flight on the 14th of March 38 and is unlikely to have finished test program until August. Without a war driving development it all takes a lot of time.]

The Walter F-8 will be a C variant which is the latest version that entered full scale production in early 1938. This again is the same plane that - as a prototype - participated last year. Well, the same plane minus some of the bugs that limited the prototypes performance. Her pilot might be van Veen again.

The RSAF might probably send a F-6F twin-seater along for flights with potential costumers etc.
