A Request

With Brazil's navy regaining strength once again, the Imperial Navy's thought has turned once again to naval aviation. Although Brazil had planned to build a carrier, this along with other plans had been nullified by the South American War. Although the Brazilians had begun training a squadron on the Chilean carrier Mapuche in late 1936, and had recently been loaned the Mexican carrier Cinco de Mayo the Imperial Navy decided in 1938 it was time to build a carrier of its own. It must be mentioned that this was mainly at the time due to prestige reasons. Similar to the battleship building frenzy that had undertaken the South American nations at the beginning of the 20th century, Brazil quite simply did not wish to be the only nation in South America not a member of the "flat-top club." Interestingly enough, the Imperial Navy had requested a naval fighter and bomber from Sienar Fleet Systems of Rio, and had designed and tested two aircraft for production, the Sienar V-31 and the Sienar V-19. Therefore, the Imperial Navy was in the interesting position of having carrier aircraft but no carrier.

Realizing that their own shipbuilding/design capability was not up to the task of designing and constructing a carrier, they made a tender for a carrier. This was to be similar in concept to the Chilean Mapuche being able to act as a training carrier in peacetime, while in wartime her role would be as a scout/attack carrier working with the Brazilian cruiser squadrons. Therefore the following requirements were set:
Speed: 33 knots
Armament: the Brazilian 120mm, 37mm, and 13.2mm for ease of logistics.
Maximum size: 804ft long, being the maximum length drydock currently in Brazil, as well as no more than 15,000 tons (note for expense purposes the smaller the better while still being able to fulfil the other requirements)
Number of aircraft: 3 squadrons worth or 36 planes if possible room for spares for an additional squadron.
As well the applicant for the tender must be able to construct the carrier in their own dockyard.

Atlantis has a few questions before submiting a bid.

Is the 15,000 ton limit in standard or light tons?
Would Brazil accept a slightly lower speed of 32 knots?
Is there a specific range requirement?
Finally are there any specific armour specifications desired?

For what you specify 33kn is not necessary and too expensive. You harld need more than 25kn, methinks.

Most likely light when you look at this bit behind the 15,000 tons...

A 25 knot carrier would be hard-pressed to serve in wartime as a "scout/attack carrier working with the Brazilian cruiser squadrons", per the requirements.

Italy could offer a more complete conversion of a Pisa Class light cruiser. The above scheme shows the two vessels already completed in a simpler conversion scheme.

Only light armour is used in order to keep out splinters.

An airgroup of 27 could be operated effectively, e.g. 12 Fighter, 12 Strike, 3 Reconnaissance but there is space for up to 50 aircraft.

120mm armament could be added, but there is little available space.

The cost of such a scheme would be 75% which amounts to 8216tons.

Russian yards...

will sit this one out. Our last attempt at building a carrier for a South American country hasn't gone well. "What??! No payments for a YEAR??!!! And that *%@#!!*&#$@ hulk filling a valuable drydock this whole time?!?!"

The RF Navy are so disgusted they are finishing her themselves, just to get the D3 cleared.

13

Sunday, September 6th 2009, 9:20pm

So the Russians will only do it if they get paid well in advance. :)

14

Sunday, September 6th 2009, 9:52pm

May be another country will buy the hulk and so the dock is empty ;)

If memory serves, both Chile and Colombia offered to buy it and complete it. I've just never seen any specs, and never heard if you were interested in selling...

Flawed as it might be, that ship might also be a candidate for Brazil's needs....

Not only Chile and Columbia and may be Brazil is intersted ;). But as Brock said, i also have never seen any stats

Nope, that's not the one Howard bought. Russia was converting an old collier for Peru.

Hmmm, I can't find any details about the deal whatsoever apart from the 2500tons Peru paid to Russia in Q3 and Q4 of 1936. Nothing about the design at all.

I know. Howard once told me he'd ordered the one Walter posted; but we were discussing the situation in the FAR folder and AdmK pointed out that he'd actually ordered a collier rebuilt to his standards. Stuart should have the specs, I presume, but that's what it is.
