ENAER Alicanto

Development of the Alicanto started in early 1936 when the Chilean Navy was evaluating designs for their newly-conceived aircraft carrier, which became the CNS Libertad. The Chilean Navy requested proposals from ENAER to project the design of future carrier-based aircraft. ENAER provided initial proposals to the Navy, and in September 1936 assigned their Chief Designer, Alexander von Ahrens, to continue development of the "ENAER Alicanto" as a private development project. Von Ahrens heavily modified the initial proposal and determined to seek an external partner to aid him in the development project. He approached the Atlantean aviation company Accrisius for consultants, and requested the use their new high-speed wind-tunnel, making a deal in January 1937. Barely a month later, with tensions rising between Chile and Peru, the Chilean Navy evaluated the initial design work and agreed to fund 40% development of the Alicanto. Accrisius additionally showed willingness to become a major partner in the design project, with the intent to market the aircraft to the Atlantean Navy (as well as internationally). In May 1937, ENAER and Accrisius concluded a contract to share the cost of development.

On July 31st, 1937, the Chilean carrier Mapuche and the Atlantean carrier Alioth teamed up to sink the Peruvian battleship Huascar at sea using only naval aircraft. The naval air arms in both countries were quick to capitalize on the rising capabilities offered by naval bombers and the Chileans quickly solidified their interest in the Alicanto. The Atlantean Navy shortly thereafter expressed their own interest in the Accrisius-built plane, marketed as the Accrisius Avenger. The Argentine Navy additionally showed interest in acquiring aircraft. Von Ahrens and his design team, now backed by Atlantean consultants, hurried the design work along, and selected the powerful new Roth R-1800 radial engine as their powerplant. This choice indirectly led to a business alliance between Chile's Austral Engines and Atlantis's Roth-Packard; Austral gained the license to manufacture the R-1800 as the Austral Incitatus, and like ENAER, used the opportunity to gain invaluable design and manufacturing experience from Atlantis. Development peaked on May 24th, 1939, when ENAER's test pilot made the first test flight of the Alicanto. The bomber promptly outran ENAER's fighter chase plane, and demonstrated remarkable agility and excellent flight characteristics.
