Territorial expanse:
Written by Ithekro

Chile currently covers the western coastal region of South America from Tierra del Fuego north to and including the Regions of Tacna and Arica (disputed with Peru). Its primary interior border is the Andes Mountains. It borders Argentina along most of this border, Bolivia on the Northern end of the Mountains and Peru from the Mountains to the Sea north of Tacna.

Chile's claim to all of Tierra del Fuego is contested by Argentina, and dispite efforts to gain the land through diplomacy and warfare, the tip still remains with Argentina. Brock's note: with the Esquel Treaty, these claims were dropped and Chile has no territorial disputes with Argentina as of 1937.

The Region of Antofagasta is disputed by Bolivia as being their rightful coastline, taken during the War of the Pacific by Chile along with the Peruvean Regions of Tarapacá, Tacna, and Arica. (Tarapacá is not contested by Peru directly, though hints of Bolivian influence have colored Peru's view on this land of late. If Peru does not want it back, then Bolivia would like to add it to Antofagasta).

Chile also maintiantains control over the islands of San Felix, San Ambrosio, Sala y Gomez, Archipelago Jaun Fernandez (includes Robinson Crusoe Island), Easter Island, and is attempting to lease or buy the Pitcairn Islands from the United Kingdom as a forward naval patrol station (which it currently does by an agreement with the United Kingdom as part of their payment for coaling rights in British ports) due the to current unsuitability of Easter Island as a naval base.

Chile also has a (1926) disputed claim to the Paracels Islands in the South China Sea that has been mostly withdrawn in favor of League of Nations control of those islands under an Iberian Mandate. Chile has the only grave on the islands from the unexpected death to a sailor in 1926.

Chile also holds a claim to a wedge of Antartica between 90 degrees W and 120 degrees W.

Since the Andes War from 1932 - 1934 Chile has expanded its borders into Bolivia and the Gran Chaco. They however lost the Providence of Tacna to Peru for help in the war against the aggressive Bolivia.

Defense Companies of Chile

Defense Companies of Chile
The Republic of Chile has a number of companies which are seen as vital to national defense, are underwritten directly by the government or military, or sell equipment to the Chilean military. This is a partial list of those companies.

ASMAR - Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada
The Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada (translated "Shipyard and Arsenal of the Navy), or ASMAR, is charged with overseeing all Chilean naval construction, from keel-laying to final delivery. ASMAR also maintains its own engineering team, separate from the Naval Engineering and Construction Bureau; in this role ASMAR offers a number of civilian (non-military) vessels such as trawlers, freighters, tankers, and all manner of other vessels. ASMAR is also responsible for manufacturing torpedoes.

ASMAR operates four main facilities:
- Astillero de Talcahuano
- Astillero de Magallanes
- Astillero de Valparaíso
- Astillero de Mejillones

ENAER - Empresa Nacional de Aeronáutica de Chile
ENAER (National Aeronautical Enterprise of Chile), like ASMAR, is a government-funded company which started as the Central Aviation Workshops, charged with maintaining the Chilean Air Force's aircraft. In 1936 the group was reformed to start it's own manufacturing division, forming a strategic partnership with FMA (Fabrica Militar de Aviones) of Argentina. ENAER is building a factory in Puerto Montt to license-build FMA I-01 Buchon fighters for the FACh.

FAMAE - Fábricas y Maestranzas del Ejército
FAMAE is the Chilean military small-arms producer, also holding the necessary licenses to manufacture artillery and small-arms ammunition. FAMAE is capable of producing lighter artillery in small qualities, along with bombs and demolition explosives.

Oyama Pacific Ordnance Works
Founded by the legendary Tochiro Oyama, Oyama Pacific Ordnance Works is a company dedicated to manufacturing artillery pieces. OPOW holds the license to manufacture the 10"/45cal gun and has developed a 10"/L55 gun, a 15"/51cal gun, and 17"/48cal gun.

Valdivia Aviación: Valdivia Aviación is a smaller aircraft-manufacturing company which has recently branched out of sport-training gliders to start producing transports. Valdivia makes three designs that have entered military service - a one-engined liaison plane (Valdivia Condor), a twin-engine transport (Valdivia Twin Condor) and a military assault glider (VEP-11).

Austral: Austral is a company that designs and manufactures engines, primarily for naval applications. Austral has developed the steam turbines for the recent cruiser Constitucion and the carrier Libertad, as well as their turboelectric drives. Austral also builds diesel engines for nautical use. Austral is preparing to enter the aircraft engine industry to license-build engines.
