Summary
The Chilean Navy Submarine Force draws its founding legend back to the Chincha Islands War in 1866, when the Navy commissioned a submarine built by Karl Flach for the defense of Valparaiso. The Flach Submarine inauspiciously sank on it's first voyage, as did the second submarine. The submarine force was refounded in the 1900s with the acquisition of American-built H-class submarines, and in the 1930s was strengthened with progressively larger and newer boats.

Chilean Héroe-class Training Submarine

The small submarine Héroe was laid down in January 1940 to serve as a training vessel for the Submarine Flotilla, as well as a testbed boat for new technologies. The Héroe carried a single 21" torpedo tube used both for weapons testing and launching simulated torpedo attacks against practice targets. There is no provision for reloads. The Héroe has an lock-in/lock-out hatch permitting divers to enter or leave the submarine during emergencies.

As the Héroe was never intended as a war boat, it had limited range and speed capabilities, appropriate to its intended use.
