Italian DDs

Well done!

Using superfiring guns on DDs in 1915 (PILO-class) and thereafter stretches things quite a bit, doesn´t it?

However, at least it looks cool and I really like the LA MASA-class. :o)

Maybe you can alter things a bit and introduce superfiring guns on DDs a little bit later?

Just my opinion of course, what do others think?

Superfiring guns on DDs...

IIRC, the first british DD with superfiring guns was HMS AMBUSCADE (laid down 8.12.1924), followed by HMS AMAZON which was laid down on the 29.01.1925. Both were single ships used as testbeds mainly.

The first DD-class with superfiring guns, the so-called A-class, was laid down 1928 (8 units).

The USN started with the FARRAGUT-class in 1932.

The first dutch DD with superfiring guns was EVERTSEN in 1925.

All this just is for the historians among us of course. Personally I´ve no problems with superfiring guns on DDs in 1920...

What do the others think?

The French Audaciaux class has 3x4.7", 1 superfiring, in 1921, but the tight limits on a navy with global responsibilities has led to innovative thinking.

The Russian Navy has yet to take that step.

the Iberian Navy is currently using aft superfiring guns - BTW I think these are earlier than the examples you mentioned Hoo?

that I should not trust my memory ...

Quoted

Their design was inspired by the British "Scott" class. So similar was their aspect to the Royal Navy destroyers that some degree of confusions occasionally resulted. The first pair (the first Churruca and the first Alcalá Galiano) was sold to Argentina. The following fourteen were to be split in two groups. The later ships differed from their older sister and were fitted with a tripod mast, a more capable bridge and 120 mm armament. The guns were of a new type with larger shields. In the second batch only the Antequera was fitted with five 120 mm guns. During the war, most central guns were landed and used to complete the armament of other destroyers in the same class. Churruca Class destroyers were excellent ships, quite fast and well armed, their only weakness being a lack of up-to-date antiaircraft armament when aviation was beginning to show its potential. All ships in the Churruca Class were built at Cartagena. The keel of the first destroyer in the first batch was laid in 1926 and six sister ships would follow between September 1928 and March 1933. In the second group, five destroyers entered service between May 1935 and the first months of the war, though some ships were initially fitted with 102 mm guns. The last two entered service in 1937.

Did you mean in service dates or laid down? And I'd forgot that they had forward superfiring guns as well.

cheers

Well....

I mentioned the dates when the british ships were laid down so browsing through that website you linked us to I get the impression that those spanish DDs were laid down 1926 and later and thus the british DDs remain the earliest of those with a 4x1 (2 superfiring) layout...

I've changed the arrangement of the guns on D15-19. They still look fairly good though.

"IIRC, the first british DD with superfiring guns was HMS AMBUSCADE (laid down 8.12.1924), followed by HMS AMAZON which was laid down on the 29.01.1925. Both were single ships used as testbeds mainly."

Acctually the Brits did it way earlier with their 5 Admiralty Leader class ships laid down in 1917 with 5x4.7" guns with superfireing guns both fore and aft.
the Shakespear class had superfiring turrets forward in 1918 and the V and W class DD's had them both fore and aft in 1917/18. I suspect the Ambuscade and Amazon were built to suplement the admiralty Leader class as destroyer leaders in addition to the purpose of experementing with new types of propulsion. It amazes me how these ships acheived speeds of 37/38 knots in 1926! The first use of twins (at least with britain) was with the Tribal class.
I got all my information from M.J. Whitlys DD's of WW2....which finnally came in today...WOOHOO! Talk about timeing or what!
