South American Minesweeping Flotilla

Chilean announcement from March 1936:

The close of hostilities in the South American War has nevertheless left numerous sea-mines in South American waterways. To speed the resumption of safe and open trade, the Armada de Chile is dispatching it's minesweepers to sweep mines in the former war-zone, and calls on other League of Nations members to consider sending their own vessels to join a South American Minesweeping Flotilla (SAMF).

Participants currently include:
- Chile (12 minesweepers by end of 1936; seaplane carrier Lautaro and transport Angamos as motherships and supply bases)
- Nordmark (8 F32-class Frigates, training carrier Gärdsmyg)
- Germany (2 large minesweepers, 4 small minesweepers, tanker Altmark)
- Atlantis (10 minesweepers, destroyer depot ship Diaprepes, coastal depot ships Boa Vista and Orinoco, oiler Sea Lark, and repair ship Assistance)
- Brazil (u/k number of ships available)

Other parties who expressed interest:
- Netherlands
- Iberia

The Kreigsmarine can support this operation, sending the fleet tanker Altmark and 6 minesweepers, the R-5, R-6, R-21, R-23, R-24, and R-26. The R-5 and R-6 are larger, deepwater minesweepers, while the remainder are smaller vessels. Altmark can carry spares and fuel the vessels, but shore support will be needed, as the smaller sweepers are not really designed for long-term habitation by the crew.

Atlantis can send the minesweepers MS-5, MS-6, MS-14, MS-15, MS-30 and MS 31 from the Carabbean along with the MS-34, MS 35, MS-36 and MS 37 from Pappeete.

To assist these and other forces being sent the region the Destroyer depot ship Diaprepes, Coastal force depot ships Boa vista and Orinoco, Oil Tanker Sea Lark and Repair Ship Assistance will also join the operation. The depot ships will act as supply bases while the Diaprepes will be present should any ships be damaged. Most likely however, when dealing with mines, most vessels will not survive the encounter! None the less the services will be available.

Nordmark will also dispatch the training carrier Gärdsmyg to the region to provide both a limited air search capacity, and additional accommodations, with facilities for up to 500men.

Depending on how long the minesweeping operation takes, Brazil will have 25 of the Chilean designed minesweepers to aid the operation by 1939. As well, Brazil offers shore support for the German minesweepers.

Has anybody here had the clever idea to ask the affected Argentine, Brazil or SAE coast owner first? What if they don´t like to have that international fleet in their home waters? Will the LoN fight their way through the defensive lines? One wonders.... o.O

Well, Argentina and Brazil have already agreed, I believe... can't really find where Hood said yes, so I might be mistaken on that point.

Considering Brazil has already offered shore support for the German minesweepers, I think Brazil's support is clear.

Iberia offers.....

.....the 12 minesweepers stationed on the Caribbeam and the hospital ship "Santa Helena".

If further aid is required, "Santa Brigid" and the 6 minesweepers in Angola can be diverted at 2 weeks notice.

Note...OFFERS, not sends! Sending requires acceptance of the offer!

The Netherlands will offer to support the League effort, or merely the SAE effort with 12 minesweepers : 3 fleet minesweepers from Amsterdam, 6 coastal minesweepers down from Dutch Guiana, and 3 fleet minesweepers from Phuket. A pair of Hermann class destroyer tenders will be dispatched for support.
These are the 2nd, 6th, 9th, and 18th flotillas.

Notice how Atlantis did not say will send. Clearly worded as an offer to the league!

Brazil, in the spirit of international cooperation, and the fact that she wishes to improve relations with everyone in general to buy arms in the future, opens her ports, and her territoral waters to any nation wishing to take part in the LoN minesweeping flotilla.

I just said Nordmark was sending the ships to the South Atlantic, which could easily mean to South Georgia as it could South America.

Now, THAT`s an agenda, eh? At least for somebody just out of a war.... ;o)

Once hostilities are fully over then the LoN ships are welcome to work inside Argentine waters alongside my minesweepers.

Well thats two nations who have no problem with it. The SAE would appear to not need the help however....

Once the conflict is over Atlantis would be very willing to assist Brazil/Argentina in clearing mines from its waterways. Afterall, Atlantis would have a vested interest in these waterways being safe for Atlantean merchant ships. I would suspect the SAE would too!

That'd be a lot of the reason Chile's sending minesweepers, actually. The sooner we can resume trade, the better it is for ABC!
