Bulgarian Army

Overview
The Bulgarian Army is a professional (all-volunteer) artillery and heavy infantry-centric army. The Bulgarian Army has participated in international operations under the League of Nations banner.

The Bulgarian Army has spent several years slowly recovering from the limitations imposed through the Treaty of Neuilly upon Bulgaria following its defeat in the Great War. However, the Treaty of Neuilly has been rescinded and Bulgaria is rebuilding it's under-equipped forces. Very little of the army is motorized at present, although a large portion of the infantry is equipped with cargo bicycles in the interim.

Bulgarian Army - Organization

Order of Battle- January 1937
Following the January 1937 reorganization, Bulgaria shuffled the nomenclature and organization structure of it's regiments. Pre-reorganization, Bulgaria fielded 40 infantry regiments in eight divisions and additional fortress brigades, 10 cavalry regiments in two divisions, and nineteen artillery regiments. Post-reorganization, Bulgaria fielded 37 infantry regiments in nine divisions and ten fortress brigades, nine cavalry regiments in three cavalry divisions, and twenty-two artillery brigades (three without equipment). Three infantry regiments were disbanded and the manpower was recruited to the new artillery regiments and the Naval Rifle Regiment. Due to the reorganization, many regiments are now listed at half or three-quarters strength while manpower needs are being reorganized.

Additionally, all modern tanks (AT-33 and AT-34) were concentrated in the Armoured Regiment. Bulgaria intends to rearm one cavalry battalion per year. All AT-17 tanks (95) were moved to the Tank School and are listed as "active reserves".

Another effect of the 1937 reorganization was the formation of sharpshooter/sniper squads attached at the company level, armed with K31 Schmidt-Rubin rifles. Company snipers receive pay one grade above their rank upon completion of their sniper training.

Also notable is the formation of ten battalions of Shturmovi Otryadi, or Stormtroopers. These elite infantry battalions (Drujina) will be formed from picked trainees and provided with a larger number of semiautomatic rifles, submachine guns, and also new flamethrowers. Their role will be assaults on enemy strongholds, or infiltration tactics during trench warfare.
