Something for the US to work on.....

After the current medium tank design is done.

UMMMMMMMM.

Can't see how that fits into WW US needs. Land monsters like that can't be moved by current US US rail or ship.

Who gets squished with this, Canada?

No demonstrated need for a second medium tank design. A heavy tank, now, that is an open niche, something that the US Army doesn't have anything to fill at this point in time.

And something it doesn't need as nobody in North America is likely to come knocking and the US Army doesn't have the means to transport such a 60 tonne monster.

Maybe work on a self-propelled howitzer instead?

Given the Japanese deployment of long 75mm guns on tanks, looks like the A2 version with the 3.5" gun and additional frontal armor will be needed. Oh, well, that's not too different.

Why stop at a 90mm gun go all the way and introduce the M68...

14

Monday, November 10th 2008, 3:09pm

Heh, I do have a version (as is historical, almost) with a 4" gun. The historical M6A2E1 design was supposed to use a 105mm gun, but was rejected for use. The T5E1 wasn't the same as the M68, but it was a 105mm weapon. Here in WW, the most available 4" gun at this time would probably be similar to the naval 4" /50.

15

Monday, November 10th 2008, 3:24pm

Well what I reacted to was the dismay shown over the Japanese 1940-41 tank and then you introduce a tank with 90mm gun and Korean war era armor (resitant to Super bazooka)

Heh, it's not introduced, it's a design in reaction to that Japanese tank. The side armor is a bit overstated by the program, its a result of the side panels you can see in the pictures of the vehicle covering the suspension. It would probably save the vehicle from a lot of HEAT penetrations on the lower hull, but it doesn't cover the upper hull at all, that would only be protected by the upper hull's 70mm armor (the lower hull also has 70mm armor, as historical).

The historical M6 carried a 76mm gun and a 37mm gun. The Japanese tank being fielded with a 76mm would put paid to the 76mm & 37mm, a tank that's twice as big shouldn't be armed with the same armament. What's the next weapon in the US inventory? Well, there's the 3.5" AA gun being worked on, as mentioned in recent US news. So that goes in in place of the other two.

Here's a corrected version of the M6, making it the historical width and correcting the deck and belly armor to their historical 1" thickness. TankSharp makes it a touch faster than it should be, and gives it a MUCH longer range than it should have (apparently the gasoline consumption numbers need some tweaking for aircooled radials), but it's in the right ballpark for the most part. The hull side HEAT protection numbers are a factor of wide treads covered by a screen of light armor, which the historical vehicle had.

And here's another version, with an enlarged turret to mount the standard 6" howitzer in place of the 4" howitzer and the 1.5" gun on the previous design. This is an equivalent, though heavier, to the KV-2, an assault tank to destroy bunkers and fortifications.
