Fuerza Aérea de Chile

Fuerza Aérea de Chile

Organization
Escuadrón de Cazas - Fighter Squadron, numbered in the 100s.
Escuadrón de Bombardero - Bomber Squadron, numbered in the 200s.
Escuadrón de Reconocimiento - Reconnaissance Squadron, numbered in the 300s
Escuadrón de Transporte - Transport or Liaison Squadron, numbered in the 400s.

Aircraft Serial Numbers
Aircraft serial numbers are assigned to all aircraft operated by the FACh, AdCAA, and Carabineros. These numbers are assigned when planes are ordered from the manufacturer or when the planes are purchased secondhand. Aircraft serial numbers consist of two sets of three digits: "XXX-YYY". The first set represents the manufacturer and model sequence (for example, the ENAER Alicanto, or the Spartan Corsair-II), while the second set represents the aircraft's order number within that class.

Aircraft Designations
Chile assigns aircraft designations based on a three-part naming system. The name is assigned regardless of the manufacturer's designation. The first letter denotes the type of aircraft the plane is classified in (F = fighter, B = bomber, etc). Some codes use two letters. The third letter denotes the manufacturer (S = Spartan, A = Accrisius, E = ENAER). The middle numeral denotes which series that model represents based on how many previous planes of that model the manufacturer has made. Sub-variants of each type receive a trailing numeral separated by a dash. For instance, the F1F-2 is the first fighter acquired from the Argentine firm FMA, and belongs to the second sub-variant of that type. The F1F-2 is otherwise known as the FMA I-01-II. The I-01-IIB manufactured by ENAER receives the F1E-2B designation.

This system ensures that the designation reflects the origin of the plane, even when the same plane is built by multiple manufacturers.
