Summary:
The Bulgarian Navy had no destroyers when the nation started its 1935 naval program, and in the Constantinople Naval Treaty, Bulgaria requested a full 25,000 tons in the destroyer category to permit the construction of a flotilla. The Drazki-class heavy destroyers are intended to provide first-rate ASW, AA, and antiship escorts for the battleship Varna and the light cruisers Danube and Maritsa, but they are also intended to be large enough to give a good accounting should they face other destroyers.

The Kystendil-class contradestroyers are intended to act as particularly light cruisers. The Kyustendils carry a gun armament similar to the Drazkis, but boast a heavier torpedo armament and higher speed. With their emphasis on surface action, they do not dedicate as much weight to ASW capabilities.

Other comments:
The designs for the Drazki were purchased from Atlantis. The design is known as the "K-Class" destroyer in Atlantis, and is also being used by the Irish Naval Service for LE Connacht. Drazki is being funded by scrapping the ancient predreadnought Sofia and the light cruiser Montana. At least four ships and as many as eight ships are planned, in order to build a uniform destroyer flotilla to operate with the Bulgarian light cruisers.

Notes and Comments:
130mm DP guns simmed as automatics to permit more weight for advanced shell-handling equipment.

The Kyustendil-class contradestroyers were one of the first warships designed in Bulgaria. Although designed like a regular destroyer, the contradestroyers have a focus on independent offensive surface action. The Bulgarian designers were substantially influenced by the Bharati Naval Service's concept of "Daakuui" and drew up the Kyustendil-class as their own interpretation of the concept.

Tactically, the contradestroyers are intended to be used in independent flotillas to engage surface targets with torpedoes. The ships are therefore equipped with massive 65cm Russian-designed Pattern 36/65 torpedoes, capable of inflicting heavy damage with a single hit. Guns are intended for use only after torpedoes have been used, in order to finish off damaged or crippled opponents; the main battery is also intended to provide excellent anti-aircraft coverage. In order to improve the rate of fire, ammunition hoists were added.

In 1943, French teledetection equipment was purchased and the four ships were refitted to carry it. The depth charge load was reduced to twenty-four charges in order to free up some topweight.
