Persia Q2 1936

April 2nd

According to unofficial reports a number of gunfights have been fought last night along the Astara river. The Ministry of Defense have simply stated that they are investigating some incidents. Conflicting rumors talk of fighting between Azeri and Persian units, others claim that the gun battles were between Security forces and smugglers while some unreliable and mean spirited people are spreading malicious rumors that the fighting was between Gendarmes and Border guards

According to the commission investigating the incidents of April 2nd the chain of events most likely to have happened is the following: Gendarmes in pursuit of suspected smugglers came under rifle fire a few kilometers from the Astara river, the assailants are still unidentified, later the same night Border Guards seeing suspicious movement near the river opened fire after numerous challanges had been ignored, the Border Guards then came under fire both from the river shore and from further inland possibly from the same assailants that had attacked the Gendarmes earlier.

In response for the aggressive buildup of Azeri forces in the border area the IDC have dispatched the 2nd and 6th Intervention Battalions to the Border as well as ordering the 2nd Scout-Bomber Wing in Ardabil to step up patrols along the border. 6 Gendarmes companies earlier earmarked for foreign service have been sent to strengthen border patrols in the area.

With new reports of Azeri harassment of Persian shipping and air space violations the press has openly started to criticize the governments lack of determined action the mood is best described by a picture in the Iranzamin Weekly showing the FAR bear sitting on a Persian kitty while the toothless British Lion has to watch helplessly

Speaking of big cats, HIH Koroush has invited foreign Governments and interested organizations to a conference in Shiraz to discuss what can be done to save the South China, Java and Bali Tigers. The Shah has promised that visas will be provided to delegates even from countries that the Persian government at the present does not have relations with.

That Lion has more of a look of apathy to me... -shrug-

Does Persia expect Great Britain to really come rushing to it's rescue or something? -scratches head-

Help? Self preservation is more correct, before the Persian Gulf becomes another FAR pond...

Russian Federation have no territorial claims on Persia. Neither does any other member of FAR.

And to think that just a few short years ago FAR member France was contributing to development of Persian naval infrastructure... It appears that suspension of Persian hostility require continual flow of subsidies and concessions. Fortunately, Persian capacity to harm any FAR member is limited.

And exactly how FAR, with no territory, or bases, or more than trivial interest, in Persian Gulf, would turn Persian Gulf, whose waters border substantial and strategic British Empire territories and whose mouth will soon be swept by British 16.5" and 9.2" guns, into a FAR pond, remains a mystery to be explained. If anything, Persian Gulf is a British pond, and Russian Federation government view this as entirely satisfactory.

Persia is totally in the wrong alliance for that! :D

Great Britain might have different ideas about who started the firefights.

If British oil comes under threat then we'll start making noises.

As AdmKuznetsov says the Persian Gulf is a British pond and will stay that way. We like status quo. Let the Russians deal with the Azeris if they have too, they have more practice at it!

Timewise, I was intending on having Princess Julianna go to Azerbaijan regarding horse preservation in the spring. She would make a logical delegate to send to the Shiraz conference.

Atlantean responce: *looks at France and Russia, then shrugs*

From all accounts it appears its the Persians doing all the harrassing in Caspean Sea, what Azeri units would be doing in the Arabian gulf is a complete mystery to Atlantis.

Romanian response to the Atlantean response:

According to our top spy, Mr D Racula, its just a naughty kitty trying to stir up mischief. Nothing to worry about, so long as it stays over there.

Various Russophobes have feared a Russian grab for the Persian Gulf for 300 years, true enough.

Russian archives show no evidence of such efforts in actuality.

Azerbaijan People's Republic
Republic of Mahabad

Both of which happened following WWII in OTL...

I assumed that was an OOC comment by AdK, but since Russia has shown no ambitions in Persia WWTL how did Persia lose all its Caucasus territories?

18

Saturday, July 12th 2008, 8:09pm

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was historically created post WW1 as a result of the Bolshiviks gaining power in Russia and the Azeris seeking independance, no revolution means no impitus for independance.

Republic of Mahabad was post WW2 (1946) so is highly irrelivant.

19

that depends if it was OOC concerning OTL, if it was IC the obviously Peter the Great, Cathrine the Great and Alexander I are also widely also had very different ambitions than OTL and I was talking of the Azerbaijan People's Republic (also in Iran 1946 OTL).
