Ethiopia-Hedjaz Non-Aggression Treaty

Preamble
The Government of the Empire of Ethiopia and the Government of the Kingdom of Hedjaz consider that the time has come to formally codify and ratify the peaceful intentions of both governments to create a spirit of cooperation on the region and further improve the political relations between the Empire of Ethiopia and the Kingdom of Hedjaz. They have, therefore, decided to lay down the principles for the future development of these relations in the present declaration. The two Governments base their common desires on the fact that the maintenance and guarantee of a lasting peace between their countries is an essential pre-condition for the general peace of the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea region.

Article I.
The High Contracting Parties obligate themselves to desist from any act of aggressive action, or any form of military attack on each other, either individually or jointly with other Powers.

Article II.
Should the Empire of Ethiopia or the Kingdom of Hedjaz become the object of belligerent action by a third power/ state, the other High Contracting Party shall in no manner lend its support to this third power/ state and will do anything on their power, including war, to ensure the defeat of that third power/state.

Article III.
Should the Empire of Ethiopia or the Kingdom of Hedjaz initiate offensive action against a third state, the other High Contracting Party shall in no manner lend its support to this third power/ state unless the third power/ state is a formal Ally of the other High Contracting Party and then this Treaty is rendered null and void.

Article IV.
The high contracting parties, having regard to the interests of security of each of them and agree to work together in close and friendly collaboration for the organization of security and economic prosperity in the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea region.

They will take into account the interests of the League of Nations in these objectives and of non-interference in the internal affairs of other Allied Powers/ States of either High Contracting Party.

Article V.
The present Treaty in no way affects the obligations of either High Contracting Party in respect to previous obligations.

Article VI.
The Kingdom of Hedjaz both recognises, and agrees to respect the interests of the Republic of Italy in the Red Sea region.

Article VII.
The Empire of Ethiopia both recognises, and agrees to respect the special relationship that exists between the Kingdom of Hedjaz and the Empire of Bharat.

Article VIII.
The present Treaty is concluded for a period of ten years, with the proviso that, in so far as one of the High Contracting Parties does not advance it one year prior to the expiration of this period, the validity of this Treaty shall automatically be extended for another ten years.

Article IX.
The present treaty shall be ratified within the shortest possible time. The ratifications shall be exchanged and the Agreement shall enter into force as soon as the Instruments of Ratification have been exchanged in Asmara on Feb 7th 1936 in the Arabic, Amharic, Italian and Hindi languages, all texts being equally authentic.
