Eurasia Airline

The EURASIA Airline is searching after the flagship of her fleet.

Following requirements are set:

4 Engines

Empty weight: 15000 - 18000 kg
Take off weight: ~ 40000 kg

Dimensions:
Wingspan: ~ 40 - 45m
Length: ~ 25m
Height: ~ 5-6 m

Speed: > 300 km/h
Ceiling: > 6000m

Range: ~ 5000 km or more

All aircraft producers are invited to send their drafts to the EURASIA Airline.

Savoia-Marchetti's SM.75 can meet those requirements depending on the number of passengers needed to be carried (around 25 for the SM.75). To meet the 5000km range requirement, some overload tanks would need to be fitted compared to the normal configuration, but that figure should be easy enough to obtain. The aircraft itself is rather smaller and cheaper than that laid out in the requirement.

Piaggio has a couple of designs for long range airliners floating around. There are two based off the Piaggio P.50 with transatlantic range and 32 passengers. One of these, the P.126 is rather novel in incorporating a flying boat hull for safety reasons (though it can't take off from water) and twin passenger decks. Theres another clean sheet project as well for a much larger aircraft for around 75 passengers which is currently being favoured.

Focke-Wulf of Germany proposes the new Fw-205, previously called the Fw-200B. A 26-seat airliner, it has more range than called for by the Eurasia Airlines specification, but that is a good problem to have. In it's base configuration, it has seats for 26 passengers, plus a crew of 8, and has additional amenities so that long flights are not too painful.

Heh, I've got nothing near 88,000lbs and a 2,700nm range.

No historic Fokker air liners had transatlantic range, most were medium range. The F.36 and F.37 were meant for the Amsterdam-Batavia route and have a 1200nm range with 32 passengers.
The heavy bombers simply aren't ready, much less for an airliner version.
Gratuitous picture :

Though I would point out that 5,000km at 300kph speed is a 16.7 hour flight, which might make sleeper berths and spare crew advisable.

Here are some possible British airliners.

Armstrong Whitworth A.W.27 Ensign; built to an Imperial Airways Specification to replace the Handley Page Harrow the prototype Ensign first flew in January 1936 and Imperial Airways ordered 12 off the drawing board. Normally up to 40 passengers could be carried. Dimensions; 123/ 111/ 23 sq ft; 4x 850hp Armstrong Siddeley Tiger IXC; max speed 220mph; range 800 miles and service ceiling 22,000ft.

De Havilland D.H.89 Albatross; designed as a transatlantic mailplane to Specification 36/33 the first prototype of this sleek monocoque wooden aircraft first flew on 20 May 1935. Fourteen are on order for Imperial Airways, six as D.H.89 mailplanes and the remaining eight as 22 passenger airliners for European routes. Dimensions; 105/ 71.6/ 22.3/ 1,078 sq ft; 4x 525hp de Havilland Gipsy Twelve; max speed 225mph; range 1,040 miles and service ceiling 17,900ft.

Handley Page H.P.54 Harrow; designed to an Imperial Airways specification for a long-range airliner this high-wing monoplane airliner with a fixed undercarriage first flew in late 1932. Accommodation was provided for twenty passengers or fourteen day/ night berths. Seven were built for use on the Middle East and Far East routes. Dimensions; 88.5/ 82.2/ 19.5/ 1,090 sq ft; 2x 850hp Bristol Pegasus VII; max speed 190mph; range 1,250 miles and service ceiling 19,200ft.

The EURASIA airline thanks for the numerous proposals. The management will now evaluate the various proposals and get in touch with the relevant companies.

I had another play with the four-engined Piaggio design. Its smaller and faster but should still carry 75 passengers over the required distance with plenty of space.

I found this interesting Dutch flying wing design from the period. There was also another larger version with 5 engines. A passenger and mailplane. Not many passengers though, thats always a problem with unconventional designs.

lenght:11.50m
span : 34m
height : 3.70m
wingsurface : 175m2
total weight : 17.500kg
cruising speed :328km/h
max .range : 20.000km
powered by 3 Junkers JUMO diesels. type and performence not known.

I only recently found the Fokker Design 160 you refer to. A 1938 transatlantic design, while it only had 26 passengers, it looked like that was for sleeper berths, so more conventionally.

Still, this request gives me a reason to go develop it.

I haven't seen the above one before.

PIAGGIO:

Piaggio P.108C:
nice plane, looks like an expanded DC-3 ;).

Piaggio P.126:
The idea, using a flying boat hull for safety reasons is very good. But if it can only be used in emergency cases, why not build a pure flight boat ???

Piaggio Albatro:
Looks too modern !!!!

the other Piaggio Design looks also too modern

Gothia Works:

GW-108T:
In my eyes, it looks like a B-29 with passenger seats ;)

Focke Wulf:

FW205:
very good draft, and it has one big advantage. The plane is in use at present so the probability that the children diseases are eradicated is very high

Armstrong Whitworth:

Armstrong Whitworth A.W.27 Ensign:
also a very nice plane, but with one disadvantage, the small range :(

De Havilland:

D.H.89 Albatross:
The EURASIA has one problem. Do you mean the D.H.89 or do you mean the D.H.91, because the D.H.91 is called Albatross ?

Handley Page:

Handley Page H.P.54 Harrow:
very ugly plane. No chance ;)

The following drafts will not be examined further.

Handley Page H.P.54 Harrow
Piaggio Albatro
D.H.89 Albatross

From the following drafts the EURASIA needs the data file:
