HMS Hood

Elsewhere on the board is was mentioned the collision during the NATO excercise would force the RN to decide on the Hood's fate.

I like it, but isn't the secondary battery a bit on the small size, as 12-4.5's is not much to batter attacking DD's with.

(assuming the main battery is otherwise engaged)

Kind of my question as well: the ship looks good and all, but the secondary battery seems pretty light. I was expecting at least 16 4.5" guns, myself.

Wednesday, March 5th 2008, 5:53pm

The reason only 12 4.5in guns is fitted is that 16 could not be added without compromising the armour modifications. The Sea Lords felt better armour and new engines was a better buy than the new 4.5in DP mounts. It gives Hood a new lease of life until the Invincible replacements come on line in the mid 1940s.

Also under repair HMS Invincible will receive five octuple 2pdr mounts. Two added to the quarterdeck and two in lieu of the single quad-mount, the other quads being upgraded. The replacement of the 4.7in guns in favour of the new 4.5in DP gun in simple destroyers mounts has been abandoned.

The armourscheme on Hood is a 12" belt 9.5ft deep then 7" belt for 8ft above this which reaches up to the quaterdeck level. Above this is the 5" portion, which is 9ft deep. Its not possible to remove the 7" belt portion without compromising the deck protection. Removing the 5" strake was planned for OTL modifications. You could put on some more draught to account for the extra armour needed. The sim of Hood below is as accurate as possible with SS, it just massively underestimates the speed.

Two nits;

No aircraft?

Are you raising the freeboard enough so that the quarterdeck is inhabitable at speed? Otherwise, that aft 40mm will be somewhat useless.
