Bulgaria Request for Proposal

The Bulgarian Air Force has lately been determined to be completely inadequate for national defense purposes. The current aircraft serving in key roles need immediate replacement, and the Air Force is looking at immediate purchases from abroad.

Fighter Interceptor
Bulgaria is looking to purchase several squadrons worth of single-engine fighters. The entries must have:
- An armament of at least two .50 caliber
- Single engine
- Enclosed cockpit
- Retractable undercarriage
- A speed of preferably 550 kph (340 mph) or greater
- Climb rate of no less 13 m/s (2,559 feet per minute)

Dive Bomber
Bulgaria is looking for a two-seat, single-engine dive bomber. The entries must have:
- A bomb carriage weight of no less than 1,000 pounds, with 1,500 pounds being ideal.
- Airspeed of preferably 360 kph (223.7 mph) or greater
- Retractable undercarriage
- Capability for an arrestor hook
- A range of 1,600 km (994 miles)

The Air Force will announce when it has determined upon a suitable aircraft.

For the fighter/Interceptor request, BFW offers the Bf-109B, which meets or exceeds all the required parameters.

Also for the fighter/interceptor request, Heinkel offers the He-112, with either the Jumo-211 or the DB-601 engine, which will also meet or exceed all required parameters.

As for the dive bomber request, that is rather more difficult (due to the requirement for a retractable undercarriage). Heinkel offers the He-118, which meets most of the parameters as is but will need some modifications if the range requirement and the desire for an arrestor hook are to be met (the He-118 has a range of 1250 km and no arrestor hook, though it does carry it's 500 kg of bombs in an internal bay).

Italy offers the Macchi C.200 or Fiat CR.35 with stats in this thread. Their current 4x7.7mm armament should be able to be replaced by 2 x 12.7mm or 2 x 13.2mm guns

Dive bombers are problematical because of construction constraints.

Britain can offer the following.

Supermarine Spitfire; monoplane fighter with the new RR Merlin and armed with eight 7.7mm Browning MGs, first flight for October 1935 (might be a bit earlier).
Dimensions; 36.10/29.11/12.7/242 sq ft; 1x 1030hp RR Merlin I; max speed 346mph at 15,000ft; range 600 miles and service ceiling 35,000ft.

No room for bigger MGs but current RAE research suggests such a concentration of firepower should be devestating to any current fighter or bomber.

Speaking of Fokker designs, there are follow ons to the D.XXI here with pictures but no data unfortunately. The modifications involved slapping in Hercules, Merlin and DB600 engines in place of the Mercury.

Pictures didn't come up in either Firefox or Explorer :(
But thanks for the try RA. The D.XXI here is close to the original, with the improved streamlining and slightly later Mercury engine. I think I nudged up the wing thickness also to avoid needing gunpods for cannon.

The Bulgarian Air Force has elected to purchase 72 Bf109Bs from Germany for delivery starting October 1935, and continuing into 1936. More aircraft will most likely be purchased in 1937, and rumor among Air Force officials indicates 1937 purposes might be for Merlin-powered Spitfires.

A decision about the dive-bomber requirements will come soon.
