Anyone figured out

how to push a cruiser class ship over 35 knots and keep it stable? I only ask because as a former member of the United states Navy I served on a Guided missle cruiser. and when i use its exact demensions and weights it is unstable at any speed whereas i know it made 40 knots in trials and was rated as stable to 36.

Are you refering to the Long Beach?

Did you add a transom stern? Fiddle with the Block Co-efficient as well. Reguardless SS is designed for pre 1950 ships, there is no Nuclear powerplant available in the engine settings slot.

Also no gas turbines like they use now. from what I understand the new engines are what allow more modern warships keep up with the Nuclear carriers, and finally negated Enterprise's serious acceleration advantage.

For the last 13,000 tons of the Dutch Cruiser allocation I had considered a very fast heavy cruiser- 34-35 knots, that I could use as a CL leader and create mismatches.

Playing with pushing that design to 36kts, it works...kinda. You either have to accept poor seakeeping or raise the freeboard an awful lot for all of these. I've played with high speed ships before, but generally they are not worth it.

Stability wise, removing the deck or belt armor has a negative effect on stability dropping it from 1.11 to 1.08, likewise unselecting the engine- all these things are waterline or below and help keep the ship stable.

Likewise superimposed guns impose a stability penalty- the difference between 4x2 (with 2 superimposed) and 2x4 is a further .05 stability and .04 comp hull.

The high freeboard needed for good seakeeping can also harm you- just resetting to the default was worth 0.1 stabilty (and .14 comp hull) .

To ensure that it's not a comp hull issue- I added the surplus to the deck armor, bringing comp hull back to 1.00 and adding .01 stability.

The South African light cruisers of the Arion-Class , laid down 1927 and weighting 6000ts, are good for 35,5kn and kept a stability of 1,16 while their seakeeping remained 1,00.

To achive this a l:b ratio of slightly over 10, a transome stern and a bc or less than 0,5 were necessary.

And of course the ships armor is hardly suffice to keep cruiser shells out of her vitals as protection is calculated against DD gun fire at best.

Anyway, the class shows a medium sized warship with a speed of 35+kn can be simed with SSv2,01.

The speed given by SS is the speed at normal load. On trials, typically less fuel load is present resulting in a smaller draught, lower displacement and less drag.

Altering the trim will enable you to get a higher stability value. IIRC, SS uses a simple stability calculation something like;

Roll period = k * metacentric height, and uses an average (typical) value for k

Gas Turbine Engines are good for acceleration and producing large amounts of power from a very small space. They can be run up to full power in a very short period of time unlike Steam Plants. The Marine Trent 30 series gives you about 50,000hp from something that weighs 22tons.

ya i was on a gass turbin ship. Big E is the most Over Powerd ship in the fleet though lol. the only reason i wonderd though is i have bene trying to pull 35+ knots out of a 11" gun armord cruiser. best i can get is 1.0 stability at 30 knots though >< although she is a decent little boat.
