German news and events - Q1, 1935

January 1, 1935 - Berlin

The Kriegsmarine has announced that Grand Admiral Raeder is travelling to Karlskrona to witness the laying of the keel of the first major warship built for Germany in a foreign shipyard in this century.. When asked, the spokeseman responded, "Of course it would have been preferable to build the ship, and her sister to come, in a German yard, from many angles. However, all the yards of sufficient size for this vessel were in use, and would remain so for several years into the future. So, an alternative was chosen."

January 3, 1935 - Grafenwohr

The testing of this year's prototype panzers for the Heer has begun. The Heer is certainly hoping that this years crop will result in an acceptable vehicle, otherwise foreign suppliers might have to be consulted.

January 28, 1934 - Berlin

The Heer has announced that it has taken delivery of the last of the semi-automatic rifles it ordered for trials purposes. After these new rifles have been in service for a year, the Heer will examine the reports of their serviceability and, it hopes, proceed forward with a plan to replace the bolt-action rifles currently equipping the infantry.

February 6, 1935 - Fredricshafen

The Arado company has reported the first flight of the Arado Ar-196 floatplane. The V-1 prototype, equipped with twin floats, took off and flew without issue today. The V-3 prototype, equipped with a single main float and two smaller stabilizing floats, is expected to fly for the first time in 3 months. Both aircraft are identical other than their float arrangements.

February 19, 1935 - Grafenwohr

Reports from the Heer's tests of proposed panzers are much more encouraging than they were last year, the Heer inspectors from General Guderian on down seem much more pleased with the performance of the prospective vehicles than they were last year. Mechanical reliability is, apparently, greatly improved from the previous year, there have been fewer breakdowns and failures. Also, the fact that the planned cannon are now available and integrated into the prospective turrets is giving everyone a better feel for how the panzers will operate than the mockups used last year when the cannon were not yet available.

February 12, 1935 - Berlin

Hermann Goering was on the telephone to Focke-Wulf's chief designer Kurt Tank. After the pleasantries were out of the way, along with the status report on the deliveries of the Fw-187 Falke to the Luftwaffe, he asked, "Kurt, do you have any technicians who are skilled and knowledgeable on the Falke who speak English? Ah, good. The Luftwaffe is looking for a couple of men like that who would be willing to take a trip for a few months. Take the family, see America, all on the Luftwaffe's mark. The Americans would like to see the Falke and Udet is looking to send a few of them to the US. Messerschmitt's sending a few of the -109s as well. Who knows, might get another license production agreement out of it, depending on where the Americans are in any similar projects. Just have the delivery scheduled for 21 March go to Hamburg in crates rather than flying to Fredricshafen. Very well, I'll speak with you later."

February 15, 1935 - Munich

The meeting in Munich between representatives of Czechoslovakia and Poland, with representatives of Germany and Russia, was opened today by Foreign Minister Stressemann. "Gentlemen, we are here to, if at all possible, settle the issue of the Czech-Polish borders. This is a matter for the representatives of the Czech and Polish governments, those of us here from other nations are here only to help our neighbors reach an amicable conclusion, not to impose some solution that we have created for our own purposes. Upon hearing the dispute, we might have ideas on how a solution might be achieved, and we might have suggestions, but they are only that, suggestions."

February 16th 1935- Polish Foreign Minister Mital present his proposal:

"Our proposal is to include the following cities with Polish majorities inside the Polish borders (1) but our main concern is to end the current situation in the city of Cieszyn. (2) the city has historically being Polish and having that city divided has caused some distress to the population for close to fifteen years now.

(1) Bystrzyca, Darków, Dziecmorowice, Jablonków, Nawsie, NIemiecka Lutynia, Piotrowice k. Frysztatu, Skrzecon, Trzyniec and Wendrynia.

(2) Teschen. IOTL the city was divided into a Polish and a Czech city due to arbritation. The possibility exist something similar could have being decided also in WW.

Czechslovakia delegation composes of Dr. Polil Prof. Poruchol and Dr Asmutny
"Esteemed colegeu's diplomat's. We are welcome by the german hospitality and bouth russias and germanys help in resolving this reacent conflict.Thank You Czechoslovakia may see the merit of polish etnic czechoslovakians wish too be part of there own nation country and we understand on some lavel polish goverment wish to help them in there desire."dramatick pause(TM)" We are strickly ageints any changes in border, period. We will be ageinst change in borders of any state. Be it franch japanise or any other. Such changes are something extremly damaging for world wide peace and security. For the last 17 years no one in the world change the political map, and we wish it to stay that way. History tells us such things are voilent and scar those affected for generations. The proposed changes will only bring resentment in both nations populence. That will lead to holt in trade as the sides will be fear and mist trust the other, that will lead not only in more povery but as its always happend more voilence. The propesed change will also lead to a dengerous precedent in the political comunity more claim will be layed and will stir the peace world wide humankind can ill affor another great war that may consume more peaple that the last. The greatest and brightest of the yough will die in another neadless strugle with no victor's only losser's.There for Czechoslovatia say the border will stay were it is, for it is better not too stear in the foggy road."

Polish Foreign Minister Mital response:

"We consider funny that our esteem neighbors use the Treaties that ended the Great War as written in stone. (Pause) Specially when the cities in our list were given to us by that same Treaties but occupied by Czechoslovakia in 1919; ILLEGALLY OCCUPIED BY THEM A WHOLE YEAR AFTER THE TREATIES HE MENTIONED.(1) (Pause)

"At the time were busy trying to gauge the situation in the Baltics and in Germany(2) to try to dispute that illegal occupation but we now plea the world community to try to see the illegality of their claims."

"Our neighbors mention resentment, but they think we don't resent them taking advantage of the post-Great war situation to set the borders that exist today? Should we remind them of their other unbroken promises and lies? Like their promises to give the Slovaks autonomy 17 years ago(3);an autonomy they are still waiting for or their invasion of Ruthenia in 1919? They speak as their borders were set by the Treaties of 1918 but they know that their current borders were set by the use of force, the same force they now in their subtle way are trying to use to intimidate us."

(1) as it happened IOTL.

(2) with no civil war in Russia still the Baltics and Germany would have being in chaos during the period, civil war or no civil war.

(3) Pittsburgh Accord was a promise to create a Federal Czechoslovakia with autonomous Slovakia but IOTL the Czechs refused to comply after agreeing to it.

"What Poland considers funny is of no concern to us.
Why the borders are now what they are is of no concern. They are what they are and that is a simple fact.
Czechoslovakia makes a counter proposal.Instead of land change, we propose citizent change. Both oure nations will give each other citizient a posibility to exchange there land and move.Relaxing a imigration laws.Any men or women that wish to change there citizenship will be give the same amout of realestate or farmland in either poland or czechoslovakia. We propose this as is the best way to defuse the situation. As we as stated before will not agree on any border change."

OOC:Well all in all this looks like it will get us no were.

OOC: it strikes me to ask as to why Poland should care about these cities, except to denude the Czechs of their established lines of defence in this area.

IC:

Note from the Nordish embassy to Foreign Minister Stressman:-

The only way this problem is to be solved is if a League of nations force is deployed to the border between Poland & Czechoslovakia. Nordmark offers it's services in leading such a force.

OOC: The area has a Polish majority and IOTL and I guess in WW the Czechs invaded the area in dispute in 1919. But I have to admit the area is rich in coal IIRC.

Polish Foreign Minister Mital's response to the Czechs:

"So I guess we don't share the same sense of humor then. (laugh from the Polish delegates) I guess your nation considers funny to invade territories, force people out of their homes just because they are part of a minority in your country and the punchline is that you expect us to reduce ourselves to your level by doing the same to our minorites. I can see we don't share the same sense of humor at all."

"So after you get rid of the Poles, who will be next? The Hungarians? The Germans? You have a large minority of them in the Sudetelands. And after them why stop there? The Jews and Roma are minorities in your country so I guess they could be next in your list. More than 30% of the Slovakians vote for autonomy from your central government, will they also be expelled? Your so-called Democracy is only good it seems for the Czechs and the Slovaks that want to be the lap dogs of the Czechs. A damn shame indeed for the decent people in your country that it seems that to you are committed to eliminate the people that their only error was of being born of other ethnic group. Is because perhaps that your nation is so paranoid that it wants to start an ethnic cleansing?

Nordmark could find a willing participant in Atlantis in reguards to such a force. Of course this isn't known by Atlantis yet because of the exclusive nature of the Diplomatic note but once it was discussed in the league...

Foreign Minister Stressemann stood. "Gentlemen, please. If this issue is to be settled peaceably and between your nations, we need to remain calm and discuss matters in a rational manner, without resort to hypotheticals and suggestions that are repugnant. Otherwise, this matter will likely result in either armed conflict, which supposedly neither of your countries want, or at the least the issue will be referred to the League of Nations where other countries will be able to stick their fingers into what is really a matter between the two of your nations."

"Now, IF, and I have not made a study of those parts of the various treaties that ended the Great War, the Polish claims that the treaties gave possession of at least some of these lands to them, then the Polish government has a good case in those areas. Given that both your nations were created or reborn by those treaties, the borders in those treaties would seem a most valid starting point for any further discussions."

Dr Popil recived a telegram from his aid.He read it, then quietly hide it in his suit.
"Minister Stressemann has right ofcourse. Let keap this civilized. The goverment of Czechoslovakia propose this. The reagion in question will became a demilitarized zone either Polish nor Czechoslovakia armed force will enter it nor will it has any police forces there. We propose that the League of nations will sead a law enforcment personel. Czechoslovakia will cover any costs of that undertaking, if Poland wishes we will split the cost in the middle betwin us.Thank You"

Czechoslovak proposal...

is not appropriate at present point in this discussion. Such measures are drastic, and should only be proposed in situations far more grave than this.

That said, Czechoslovak government did not propose turning people out of their homes. We ask Polish government please not to reply as if they did.

Other possibilities come to mind. Exchange of territories. Purchase of disputed territories. Transfer of territory to Poland in exchange for duty-free access to Polish ports. Some combination of these measures?

Russian Federation government are not greatly concerned with nature of final outcome, but that issues are resolved peacefully and amicably.

Foreign Minister Mital's response:

"I apologize for my outburst that ended yesterday proceedings. Will try to refrain from using hypotetical situations in the future, the common good being our main concern."

"We found the Russian proposals interesting and we will be willing to accept a mix of the Czech and Russian could work. We could accept a transfer of the cities in our list in exchange of duty free shipping of Czech goods out of Gdansk. We also promise the region will be demilitarized and if the Czechs so desire a small League's police presence could be acceptable to us also."

February 28, 1935 - Rostock

First flight of the He-111E, a new version of the Heinkel bomber for the Luftwaffe. The original elliptical wings have been replaced by tapered wings (to lower costs) and the nose section of the plane has been replaced with a glazed dome that covers the entire nose, rather than having a step for the pilots windscreen. The engines remain the Jumo 211s that are used on the Luftwaffes He-111Bs.

[Essentially the He-111H, Heinkel knows he's unlikely to get the DB-601 for the He-111 so he's sticking with the Jumo 211 he already is using.]
