Foreign Minister Mital has asked the League of Nations to help mediate a new border agreement in the region, stating that "we are unsatisfied by past decisions by the League and we desire that mistakes be rectified."

The Czech ambassador refused to discuss the incident expect by asking "for rational minds to please ensure no further incident of this type occur again."

Petrograd Post, 9 January 1935

We read with dismay reports in Polish press about hostile acts between brother Slav nations. We recall recent favorable developments between German and Polish governments which resolved contentious issues surrounding Gdansk by peaceful, amicable negotiation and agreement. We fervently hope such developments regarding Teschen are possible between brother Slav nations, Poles and Czechs. We will be gravely concerned if either government attempts to alter present situation regarding Teschen by force of arms.

January 9th, 1935 - Berlin

The German government has responded to the reports of shots being fired in the Teschen region with the following statement:

"The government of the German Reich has learned, to it's dismay, of shots having been fired in the Teschen region between Polish and Czech troops. We strenuously urge both sides to avoid any further fighting, and we would be willing to assist, in any way possible, in solving the problem."

January 12th 1935- Foreign Minister Mital informed today that he will accept Russian and German mediation to resolve the border dispute with our neighbor to the South.

He considers that "both nations have shown good faith in the past and we will abide by their joint decision." (1)

(1) OOC: Of course we prefer the whole district, Thank you very much. :D Of course Poland will abide by any joint decision. But I can understand the Czechs position. Any lost of territory could open a Pandora's box, with border discrepancies both with Hungary and Germany. Of course I can't recall if the Sudeteland issues have being resolved with Germany.

The Dutch are pleased to see Germany and Russia working together to help in this matter.

Responding to the Polish request, the Dutch will submit that the League delegate the mediation to Germany and Russia.

January 15th 1934- Marshall Kustrzeba smiled while being briefed in regard to the Teschen situation. His ploy to bring the issue to the world stage worked perfectly.

Now he was going to push for a plebiscite for the region, knowing perfectly well the majority of the population in the region are ethnic Poles. Part of his plan to ensure the borders of Poland before he departs this world.

Heh then he should be happy the Dutch aren't on the mediation team, given our repeated opposition to plebiscites 8p

Now the Marshall just has to push his claim to the historic Polish coastline on the Black Sea !

The Marshal would do well to reflect...

on the meaning of "... peaceful and amicable negotiation and agreement..."

The Czechoslovak government are unlikely to agree to a process with such a clearly detrimental outcome.

And the Russian government will strongly object to Polish or German military or economic pressure on Czechoslovakia.

January 16th 1935- Foreign Minister Mital announced today that Poland desire a plebiscite to resolve the border dispute between Czechoslovaquia and our nation. Mital stated that "we consider the population of the region should have the opportunity to decide their political future without being intimidated by a repressive regime"

The Romanian ambassador meanwhile expressed some concerns in regard to the actions being taken by our government to resolve the situation while the Yugoslavian one applauded the decision, stating "something similar should be arranged for Slovenia and Dalmatia by the League."

Troops in the region continue to be in alert but no further troops have being move to the area to keep the situation as clam as possible. Local commanders from both sides have agreed to pull their troops away from the border to try to refrain of a repeat of the actions of nine days ago.

Germany has not yet examined both sides claims, nor has Czechoslovakia even agreed to our mediation at this time, so it is far too early to propose a solution. And certainly it would be most inappropriate for Germany to pressure either side on other matters at this time, should such a matter come up it would be necessary for Germany to recuse itself from mediation.

Are there any other areas of the Czech-Polish border that are in dispute?

OOC: Hungary claimes Slovakia

and there is a Hungarian minority there. Though the majority Slovaks will have a very different opinion

[Heh, one neighbor at a time! If we can settle one dispute, then others can be dealt with, but if we let everyone come to the table at once nothing will get done.]

Saturday, August 4th 2007, 4:43pm

Or rather...

nothing will remain!

[Germany refuses to comment on that. :)]

Saturday, August 4th 2007, 5:12pm

OOC: I knew I opened a can of worms. So Hungary made a formal request for border adjustments or is just OOC comment?

17

Saturday, August 4th 2007, 5:22pm

OOC comment

I expect we'll have to get someone to play Hungary (and Bulgaria, and <insert further dissatisfied irredenta-seeking countries here>

It makes political sense for Hungary to lay their claim now, with the Czechs beign occupied with Poland. The Czech Army is a decent force but could trash the Hungarian Army fairly easy. The table could get full and negotiations could drag for months.

Don't forget the Rumanian-Hungarian border issues as well. :) In general my impression is the Hungarians were not well liked in their treatment of subject peoples, and not on great terms with their various neighbors post Empire.

OOC: anyone want to play the Czechs and the Hungarians? at least thru the negotiations?
