Vladivostok Verifier - 7/2/21

Several old ships due for scrapping have arrived in their bases after their transfer from Russian Federation Black Sea Fleet. These ships are: Battleships Pantelmeion and Ioann Zlatoust, and Armored Cruiser Riurik. Their artillery will be incorporated into coast artillery defenses of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Vladivostok, and Cam Ranh Bay, the Russian Federation naval base in French Indochina.

Armored Cruiser Riurik's two dual 254mm/50 turrets will be incorporated into Vladivostok's defenses, while Battleships Pantelmeion and Ioann Zlatoust weaponry will reinforce Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and Cam Ranh Bay respectively.

Things were pretty thin in the Far East...

Except for Vladivostok, there was no capital ship-caliber coast artillery in the Far East. Now at least the main naval bases have some. Those old ships sure come in handy! But that's all the predreads Russia has, except for the Estafey, the gunnery training ship. She'll become a museum.

But I've still got a bunch of French predreads and armored cruisers to dispose of... And a lot of colonial possessions to put them in!

so too does Atlantis...

..but I've never really given much thought to coastal battery's. After seeing this post how ever it kinda inspires me to think about it.

Do. In conjunction with mines and warships, they can be seriously effective. Check out the battle of the Irben Strait, in the Baltic, August 1915. Two German dreadnoughts with escorting cruisers, against the Russian predread Slava. Despite the German dreads having five times Slava's gun power, those mine and shore equalizers made it slow going.

Then in 1917, the Germans made an even bigger effort, with Moltke, Third Squadron - Konig, Bayern, Grosser Kurfurst, Markgraf - and Fourth Squadron - Friedrich der Grosse, Konig Albert, Kaiser, Kaiserin, and Prinzregent Luitpold - against the Russian predreads Slava and Tsarevich. That's 10 German dreadnoughts against two Russian predreads, coast artillery, and mines. Slava was eventually sunk, after a prolonged game of hide-and-seek among the islands and mines, but I've salvaged her guns for the Baltic battery named after her!

Big Diomede Island

I've added a page on Coast Artillery to my website, with the new installation at Big Diomede Island as the first example.

It's found here.
