SAE newsflash Q1/34

[OOC: It´s been a while since I meddled in international affairs and wrote some news. Actually there´s so much to answer, so much that happens or happened in WesWorld I would never know where to start. So I decided to just make a cut and re-start with Q1/34. And this too is just a small window into our interesting world...]

Q1 1934 Newsflash

International Politics

05-01-1934
Cleito. In reaction to what Japan rates as repeated violations of the Cleito Treaty their Commander-in-Chief Sanada Yukimura quit the naval arms limitation treaty on new years eve. International response could best be described as disappointed. There also seems to be some discussion as to when Japan officially will be freed of the limits set by the treaty. They seem to read the treatys text in Part 1, Article II as if they are out once their note reaches Atlantis. However, international understanding is that Japan will be bound to their word until 01-01-1936. A spokesman of the throne confirmed that this also is the opinion of the South African Empire. Any action exceeding the boundaries of the Cleito Treaty will hence be rated as a violation of that treaty.

14-01-1934
Corrientes. The ongoing conflict in Paraguay continues to fill refugee camps in Grand Uruguay. In a camp 20km east of Corrientes are about 8.000 people now which have to live and survive under very poor conditions. Despite all efforts by the South African government and the Red Cross it will only be a matter of time until organized help will collapse under the pressure of many new refugees entering our territory from the North. Epidemic outbreaks of cholera and other diseases will soon raise the already high death toll in this and other camps at the border. In addition small riots have broken out when people fought for food and shelter. The Army was forced to take steps and several men were arrested.

Talks with the Argentineans have revealed similar conditions in their camps. An end of the raging civil war and a return to their home towns seems to be the only chance for all those who fled the terror that has Paraguay in his grip.

Local News

09-01-1934
Durban. Starting in to a new year the Royal South African Navy will continue her program to modernise large parts of the fleet. Especially smaller units which have reached a certain age and which suffer more than larger units from their daily work will be made fit for another decade of service among the Empires naval services. Among these units will be several minesweeper, light cruisers and auxiliary vessels like tenders. Especially the latter have caused some concerns in the past years as many of them were build shortly after the turn of the century and their quarters and work shops no longer fulfil modern requirements. Additionally the reorganisation and modernisation of the battle fleet will continue. Several new units will be added to the squadrons this year while the elderly units of the Koning class are expected to retire in summer. Two of them will then be delivered to Peru.

11-01-1934
Buenos Aires. With a ceremonial act a new battleship was laid down in Buenos Aires yesterday. The ship will become the second unit of the Monarch class of which the namesake unit was already laid down in Montevideo last year and is nearing launch date. The units are meant to replace old ships in accordance to the Cleito Treaty.

17-02-1934
Douala. The Navy announced today the loss of K14, a submarine build 1929 in a yard on the Prince Eduard Islands. According to a spokesman the submarine was on a training mission when it failed to contact its base on the 5th. Additional attempts on the following days also failed and scout planes send out to look for the vessel or at least some wreckage returned without success. On the 12th it became obvious the submarine was to be rated as a loss for unknown reason. The families of her crew were informed two days ago.

03-02-1934
Pretoria. The Army Headquarter announced the foundation of a new company. Influenced by other nations who have made women part of their fighting forces the Army will start their own experiment and test if women can fulfil the role of a soldier like men do. So far women had only been in auxiliary and supporting services. The new company will be under direct supervision of General of the Army Graaf van de Scheel who commands the South African special forces. According to The Army Headquarter recruitment of women has already begun. Requirements regarding size, health and provenience are similar as those for men.

23-03-1934
Port Elizabeth. The new battlecruiser RSAN Triumph was commissioned today. The core of her new crew is made of sailors that left RSAN Cameroon when their old home was brought into the yards for a rebuild. RSAN Triumph will leave Port Elizabeth for a series of tests in early April and will continue her trials during the next 6 month before becoming a fully operational unit. The new ship is the first of a class of two that were laid down to counter the super cruisers laid down in several countries all over the world. With their armament of 33cm guns and a speed in excess of 30kn they will be ideally suited for their task. The second unit, RSAN Victory, is expected to join the fleet in mid-summer.

24-03-1934
Pretoria. The first recruits for the new 1st Women Irrefular Company were welcome in the Koller Casern two days ago. These women, which soon started to call themselves De Groote Keeten, will begin their training in company with men of the 15th Training Company on the 1st of April.
