Bangkok Bugle Q3/32

Rather mental-blocked for news lately...blame Navalism. :-)

---------------

4 July
In a surprise move, the government has announced the nationalisation of Siam's rubber industry. While small family-owned farms will see business remain as usual, company-owned plantations and all processing plants are to be purchased by the Siamese Government at fair market value.

*looks at date.*
Fireworks are needed to celebrate the nationalisation of the rubber industry. :-)

The market is expected to bounce back after this hit...

(this annoucncement is made while the Cowes Conference is underway, about 3/4s or so of the way through it.)

The Royal Bank of Bangkok is pleased to announce an expansion of its services. Beginning 1 September, we will be offering a full and complete line of maritime insurance policies for all types of vessels, at very competitve rates. Contact the Royal Bank of Bangkok, when you're ready to accept only the best!

Sounds like something the Philippines would go for... with all those exploding ships.

Shortly thereafter, and following extensive discussions at the Royal Mail, the following announcement is made:

Mail posted within the United Kingdom for carriage overseas will be carried aboard designated Royal Mail Steamers, awarded the prefix R.M.S. when used in this manner. Only ships registered within the United Kingdom, and meeting the requirements of the Royal Mail, will be permitted to bid for these contracts.

Some competition for Lloyd's, I suppose. ;-)

(Not sure how the Royal Mail ties into it, as the Royal Bank of Bangkok does not discriminate on where a vessel is registered when underwriting policies...)

I'm certain that one of the requirements to be awarded the coveted prefix R.M.S. is adequate insurance from an underwriter with a long-standing record of unquestionable dependability and financial strength. And if it wasn't, it is now.

In other words, he just fenced off a huge chunk of the Royal Bank of Bangkok's potential insurance business, Swampy.

Hey! No fair!

Lloyd's can expect a blistering telegram from a certain Sir Murdoch in the near future...

Uh oh! The Australian government might consider to lock him up for a while. Such a telegram could cause some serious cracks in the relationship between Australia and the UK.
Better yet, ask for some Heavy units from Siam to solve the problem. :-)

29 August

The Royal Siamese Army announced today the purchase of GO-32 armoured vehicles from Atlantis. An intial order for 24 units was placed with options for further orders should they prove satisfactory.

The Royal Siamese Air Force also confirmed the ordering of a Zeppelin from the Atlantic island nation...
(ooc: as seen in the Aviation threads.)

12 September

Rumours are afoot that the Royal Siamese Navy has acquired a battlecruiser from a South American country. Naval officials refused comment...

24 September
Somewhere in the jungle in deep North-East Siam

"...and so we have enough weapons to equip a 750-man force, with succifficent spares for that force, courtesy of our island friends to the north."

The Indochinese man nodded. "This is most generous of you."

"I'd call it more enlightened self-interest. We have a mutual enemy, my friend." The smile went away. "They took away our land, shackled us to an undefensible border, and forced us to surrender part of our freedom." The shark-like smile returned. "But no more. Soon the sound of freedom will ring throughout Southeast Asia." Mr. M. poured a glass of sake, several bottles having been thoughtfully included with the weapons, and raised a toast. "To the defeat of France!"

"To the independence of Viet-Nam," toasted Ho Chi Minh.

South America? Trinidad or Oyama? Or is it South Africa?

14

Monday, November 13th 2006, 5:19pm

My money is Argentina is the benefactor of the Siamese Navy.

Agreed, Trinidad seems the most likely candidate for sale here.

Well there is that Brazilian Battlewagon under costruction in the Philappines.
