Aussie ship drawings

More drawings. First one is the Carrier to scale, AC shown are Vought O2Us. I'm just going to have to live with the smoke problem. Probably will result in the CV being converted to diesel engines at the first oportunity. Third one is the 12x4.7" Torpedo Cruiser. The scout cruiser is there for comparision.

Thoughts?

Torpedo Cruiser

I'm wondering about the effectiveness of triple 4.7" guns at a primary weapon of a cruiser. I can see twins and lots of them (Atlanta or Dido style) for a good Anti-Aircraft cruiser, but in a survice action, rapid five 5 inch guns and below start to not be very effective against cruisers. Destroyers yes, light cruisers at certain ranges yes, heavy cruisers, maybe against the lighter ones at some ranges or against unprotected sections, but other than that all you have is a huge destroyer with lots of destroyer guns and destroyer torpedoes.

Now if you wanted a real fire trap, make the floatplane cruiser your torpedo cruiser. Give Oi a run for its money.

Those funnels on your carrier are a long way from the boilers. They should be at least where the crane is amidships. The ducting that would be required to link the current funnel would seriously cut into your hangar space.

I´d try to vary their brdiges a bit without giving away their "family face".

I´d also add more details like boats and the like to the drawings but otherwise they are pretty good.

The torpedo cruiser will be primarly experimental. Not only with the torpedo concept but she will also be testing triple 4.7" turrents.

Hmm... a torpedo-floatplane cruiser, the Philllipinos would really love that!

For the funnles I might be able to place them aft of the crane and move the AA guns aft. Tha should work.

Desertfox,

Regarding your CVL, the whole of the flight deck is offset to port of the centerline and most of the top hamper seems to be sited well forward of midships. I am not sure how this would affect stability, seakeeping and hull stresses.

Nevertheless, I thought you may have something going here so, I decided to take a crack at a quick redesign. May be recycle bin material though.

I think she looks much much better personally, allthough I think you'd hear Swampy stating "more arrester gear!!....needs...more....arrester...gear!"

BTW Monty, what program do you use for your drawings again?

The carrier does look a lot more stable.

She would likely need bulges mefinks, Monty seems to also share this view as the can be seen on his drawings.

She looks great. Where could i buy such a ship ;-)))))

Yes, what program do you use ? Paintshop ? MS Paint ?

My repeated comments about scale still apply.

I also have serious reservations about the aircraft stored on the flight deck. They look to be in a good position to be washed off and are particularly exposed.

You cant have everything. Thats I price Im willing to pay for an increased airwing.

Contact your local Australian Ambassador for more information. :-D

Not bad. I like her. Think you can do her with an unbroken angled deck and a unraked funnel?

Is this what you mean? The white lines at either end of the ship denote the centerline. They can be easily deleted using Microsoft Paint, the program I am using.

I'm thinking the previous picture (ie, the straight deck) would result in a much better ship for the period, with the lack of landing aids and commonality in how you land between that design, HMAS Argus, and any future Australian carriers.

I is a bit difficult to understand the rationale for the angled deck. As designed there is no apparent use.
It would be logical to angle the catapult as well. That way the a/c could take off without flying directly over the forward batteries.

I don't know that much about air patterns, but would there be problems with air currents when using the angled deck?

I'm with Hrolf on this one, period wise such a radically angled flightdeck seems very much out of place. I also thing the overhang that acts as an aircraft park is too drastic.

Monty's first drawing seems much more accurate for the period.

I think Dfox might be having evil ideas of converting it to a full deck carriers a while down the road, but i have to agree that Monty's first pic seems the best suited (this being said by the first guy to take a stab at drawing it :P)

Whoaa!! I just meant having the deck edge straight insetead of a zig zag, not a full blown angled deck. Originaly the angled deck was because I had the superstructure in the middle, Ive kept it for looks now not because of a real need for it.

And yes I have evil plans for her, down the line.
Harriers would fit perfectly!

I think the Zig zag looks good personally. Less flightdeck structure to take a rouge wave and buckle due to over reaching supports. In addition I think the aircraft lift could be turned 90 degrees and moved forward slightly in order to allow more of the angled deck to be utilized.
