Argentine-Chilean Agreement (Esquel Treaty)

Preamble
Both Contracting signatories shall abide by the following articles arrived at by mutual agreement. The agreements have no expiry date and are the foundation of future peaceful relations between the two signatories.

These articles are are;

Article I
The renouncing of any claims by both countries on the other’s territory, specifically Chile on Patagonia and Argentina on the rest of Tierra del Fuego.

Article II
The beginning of mutual defence planning and the future intention of disarming in the Tierra del Fuego region by both sides to reduce tensions before any lasting settlement is agreed.

Article III
The acceptance of both countries right to have independent arms and the acknowledgement that these weapons are for self-defence.

Article IV
The pledge that both sides shall not wage war between them.

Article V
The Argentine Republic hereby promises not to intervene or aid in any way Peru or Bolivia if either nation declares war on Chile but will offer aid to Chile in such an event.

Article VI
That Chile will not interfere or aid in any way in Paraguayan politics or those of her neighbour Uruguay in matters that concern the Argentine Republic and offer military support in any future case of war with a foreign power.

Article VII
Both countries will work towards a South American continent free of violence and oppression.

Article VIII
The abolishment of trade tariffs between the two countries.

Article IX
The establishment of a joint Argo-Chilean Pan-Andes aerial postal service.

Article X
This document does not affect the legality of any previous treaties between the two countries.
