South American Naval News: 1931

January 31, 1931

Chile and Nordmark renew their commitment to keeping Europe and South America out of a direct war. The Non-aggression pact will keep each party from interfering in the affairs of the other, and hopefully will be seen as a sign to the rest of South America that war with the Europeans does not always have to be the answer.

February 7, 1931

Chilean Army positions on the border were shelled again for the first time in nearly a year. "Seems they finally got some positions filled again" commented the local major.

February 19, 1931

Using aircraft spotters, Chilean artillery have silenced the recent Bolivian shellings on the border regions.

March 1, 1931

The Dreadnought Almirante Latorre completed her rebuild in Talcahuano. Her oil fired boilers and improved fire control should make her as up to date as possible. Her sistership Almirante Cochane will be going in for a rebuild starting in May.

March 9, 1931

The Carrier Mapuche joined the fleet today after finalizing her required air operations drills. Her airgroup will begin to assist in hunting down smugglers and pirates as well as keeping the coasts of Chile safe from invaders.

March 26, 1931

The "Heavy" Cruiser Volcan Osorno joined her sister and near sister ships in the Pacific Ocean yesterday as her trials began. With this new cruiser being completed the Chilean Navy will focus on getting the Dreadnought Cochane rebuilt and the Armored Cruiser Oyama completed and then shift to building up its lighter escort and patrol forces. A heavy study is beginning on what sort of destroyers should be built in light of all the increase construction of Chile's neighbors.

April 6, 1931

Atlantis support for the Oyama-Pacifica Ordinance Works has boosted the local economy. While some say that war and though warship production is in the end harmful to an people, it is hard to argue with productivity. However shipworkers have been layed off in some yards due to a lack of production. With only the Oyama and Chile's second Dreadnought about to begin her rebuild, most yards are idle due to a lack of funds or time for new naval construction projects. However with recruitment for the Navy, Army, and Air Force up due to the threat of Bolivia, the number of men out of work is lower then anticipated.

April 13, 1931

Bolivian Mountain forces have attempted to secure an outpost on the Chilean side of the Andes Mountains. "This is becoming intolerable" said one cabinent member on his way to speak with the President. "They want a war, why don't we give them one?"

April 15, 1931

War has been averted again by order of the President and by the soldiers of Chile sweeping back Bolivian Forces to the border. "We shall not declare a war until the time is right, or war is declared upon us first."

May 2, 1931

The long awaited rebuild of the Dreadnought Almirante Cochane began Tuesday in the same dock as her sistership. The yardmaster thinks that this time the rebuild will go quicker and more smoothly since his men have an idea of what has been requested of them. He also seems to think that they might be able to improve on the specification a little here and there.

May 19, 1931

"An undeclared war exists on the Chilean Border" reports one Puerto Motti newpaper. "Everyday Chilean and Bolivian soldiers fire shells and bullets back and forth in the montains of our fathers fathers and yet no one says anything." The Government has stressed that this is not entirely accurate. While tension on the border is high, the shooting war is very intermitent.

May 28, 1931

A Bolivian Scout aircraft was shot down by navy planes operating from the Carrier Mapuche. It seems the scout managed to elude the regular patrols but was caught by naval fliers who have been patrolling far inland near the Peruvean Border.

June 2, 1931

Peruean Foriegn Minister requests that Chilean Naval aircraft respect Peru's airspace. Chilean Navy asks "What's an airspace?"

June 4, 1931

The Chilean Government sent an apology to Peru for its fliers antics late in May. It seems that from the air, all the dirt looks alike, so they did not know they were in Peruvean territory when they shot down the Bolivian Scout. The Fliers do insist that the intruder was in Chilean territory and they simply chased him when he ran away. Strict rules of engagement are being considered for naval and air force pilots.

June 22, 1931

Peru's purchase of an Indian Dreadnought has some Naval officers worried. While the two Chilean Dreadnoughts and the Almirante Gideon will be more than a match for anything in the Peruvean Navy, just the fact that they are doing it is the worry. What is Peru doing? Are they siding with their old ally Bolivia against us. Are they just worried about our buildup? Are they just flexing in the good world ecomony and amundant naval resources? Only time will tell.

July 4, 1931

Almerante Latorre rejoins the fleet after over a year away. Some fears with the battleship out of the fleet have been calmed now that it returns.

July 9, 1931

Rumors of a Passanger Liner being accosted by the Pirate Harlock has been filtering into Santiago. No confirmations have been heard. The rumors that is was one of the older British ships running out of Canada have disturbed some people.

July 27, 1931

The Chilean Pacific Anti-Piracy Patrol has sent out all the new Atlantis Built Cruisers, including the newly joined Volcan Osorno on a four month sweep on the Central Pacific. With two heavy cruisers, two light crusiers, and an aircraft carrier, the Chilean force hopes to be able to run the pirate Harlock to ground before he strikes at another cruiser ship. (Editors Note: The "attack" on a Canadian Liner is still unconfirmed)

August 14, 1931

Hull form tests have begin on new destroyer designs to begin construction late next year and early in 1933. It is hoped with these new destroyers the fleet will be protected from any enemy submarine, torpedo boat, or destroyer in the future.

August 15, 1931

Argentina and Chile have agreed to not get involved in each other's affairs, especially when it comes to Paraguay and Bolivia respectively.

September 4, 1931

Explosions rocked the border again this week as Bolivian and Chilean artillery trade shells. "It is like they want us to declare war on them" said one cavalry lieutenent.

September 17, 1931

Oyama Yards seems worried these days with news of a plague in the Philiappines. Mr. Tochiro Oyama was unavalible for comment, but one of his staff officers said that he doesn't think their business will be effected too much as Oyama Yard's in the Philiappines in on Bhutan which is isolated from Manilia by water and distance.

September 24, 1931

The Republic of Chile has orders all trade with the Philiappines to cease. All recent transients and migrants from that region will be screened and examined. The Republic does not fear that the disease will spread to Chile since its business with the Philiapines has been reduced since the Parcels incident five years ago. Most shipping to the Philiappines from Chile now goes throught Bhutan and the Oyama Yards there. It has not encountered a single case.

Septmember 30, 1931

Asian Disease seems to be increasing the amount of fear there is in Chile. No cases have been reported in the nation, but its spread in Asia has people worried. Their is talk of cutting off trade with Asia until this disease is controlled, much like contact was halted when Europe was having a massive influenza epidemic.

October 1, 1931

Treaty issues have caused some humor among the Chilean Naval Officers. "Italy and some of the others are holding on the the letter of the treaty, while others are holding onto the spirit of the treaty. None really hod to the paper and the meaning of it as a whole anymore. Its all a joke now. They are killing time until the treaty ends in 1937 so they can go off an do some legal killing."

October 8, 1931

Peruvean diplomates have asked once again about the chances of the return of the land they lost to Chile in the War of the Pacific. The Republic of Chile has responded that that issue was decided by the Treaty of Ancón, and the people of those lands. They voted to stay with Chile, so that is where they will stay. (Historical Note: The final fate of the lands was deturmined by plebiscite, but the results were disputed for decades. The end result was negotiated by US President Hoover in 1929, but since he wasn't able to in Wesworld, that dispute was not resolved as historical).

October 12, 1931

Chile earned a potenial contract today for a new destroyer class to be designed and built for Brazil. Some wonder if this is a wise move on Chile's part to arm a potental rival. Other's say that it is in Chile's best interest to try to make mends in light of coming war with Bolivia.

October 19, 1931

Bolivian Forces again tried to advance into Chile, only to be stopped by the Chilean Air Force. "Which them run was the most surreal experiance I've had in this airplane" said one pilot.

November 11, 1931

Rememberance Day for the Canadians will be more interesting nowadays. The Pirate Harlock seems to have struck again. Again a Canadian liner was attacked, but this time in the Atlantic Ocean. The oddested expericance having a cruiser come up along side and all they stole was the grains out of the hold, some extra fuel, so the liner had to make for port with a more economical speed. They also seems to have taken a pair of passangers with them. A short man and a tall blond woman. The manifest says there were a Mr. and Mrs. Tetsuro from Japan. No reward has been demanded or offered for this pair.

November 30, 1931

Work continues on the Dreadnought Almirante Cochrane and the Armored Cruiser Capitan Oyama. It is hoped that these vessels will be completed around this time next year.

December 7, 1931

Bolivian Forces again cross the line only to be stopped by Chilean cavalry and air forces. However rumors of Peruvean forces as part of the raid have gone unanswered. Are the Peruveans allied with Bolivia?

December 9, 1931

Demands for an explaination from the Peruvean Government over the involvement of some of their soldiers in the recent raid have gone unanswered.

December 13, 1931

Peru apologies for the preceived lack of concern over the acts of its soldiers. The Peruvean Gevernment calls them a group of mercinaries working with the Bolivian Military. The Chilean Army is not too sure about that claim.

December 28, 1931

"Summer. As the hot air rises over the mountians more and more shelling occure between Chile and Bolivia. When will the final straw be cast? Has is already been cast just that no one wishes to acknowledge that the llama is dead yet? Tomorrow. They say it will be better tomorrow. Better for whom?" A soldier's lament.

You know, Harlock's a menace. It'd be nice to see the wreckage of his cruiser floating in the shark-infested Pacific. Nice job as always.

All caught up now.

Thank you.

Yeah but now he's in the American/Atlantean playground. Looks like I'll have to send my own forces out to find him. What troubles me is how Harlock could get from the pacific to the Atlantic without being discovered. If he sliped through the Panama Canal it would seem Iberia is a sleep!

Or collaborating...

Or simply doesn't give a damn. And if he's in the Atlantic, it's time for the Brazilian fleet to go hunting.

Harlock's support mechanism remains a mystery. He could be out of the Atlantic. He could be heading back to the Pacific. The Mediterranean Sea. The Artic?

Finding one warship in an ocean during wartime is hard enough....finding one that is undamaged and can blend in during peacetime?

I thought Harlock's ship was a warship, a cruiser IIRC.

Anyone suggesting that Iberia would not uphold the rule of law should be very wary!

Under present circumstances, I'd consider it unlikely Harlock is heading pack to the Pacific.

11

Monday, July 31st 2006, 2:44pm

It is more suprising he has managed to slip Nordmarks South Atlantic force, but I wonder how long it will be till he stops a Whaler in order to steal the blubber.

Deathshadow is a light cruiser at last report. It is not known if the Deathshadow was involved in the raid at this time. That is the assumption based on the witness accounts of the ship that came along side being a "cruiser". However an AMC is also called a cruiser. Only the fact that is was Harlock seems to be confirmed....a tall man with a scar on his cheek and a patch over one eye wearing and flying the skull and crossbones.

Harlock tends to hit traders and historically military vessels for supplies. He's not known for attacking passanger liners. Oddly, no valuables were stolen.

The mystery deepens....

I've never seen the anime, so my mental image of Harlock was something like Euron Greyjoy, only in 30s clothing.

Deathshadow must be capable of disguising herself somehow.

14

Monday, July 31st 2006, 8:41pm

Well, somehow the Chileans mistook the American designed Luzon for the Deathshadow, so it is assumed that maybe the ship can be configured to look like cruisers of other nations, or perhaps even civilian vessels. Or it was not Deathshadow that did the raid, but some other vessel that can more easily hide at sea.

Traditionally he looks like this:

Interesting side note from the pages of history:

November 8, 1931 - Panama Canal closed for couple of weeks due to damage caused by a number of earthquakes
