Africa in the Wesworld

Inspired by the Hainan discussion thread.. I'm feeling curious.

Africa, it seems to me, is much more advanced than it was historically, and probably has a higher standard of living for the average person. Long-term colonization by Atlantis has probably had a strong effect on the west coast.

The existence of the SAE as an indigenous "African" state has probably had a positive effect on the areas surrounding it, as well.

What is the relationship between Italy and the East African State (our Ethiopia), btw? Is the EAS basically a puppet country?

Its all a bit up in the air really. Does Africa have the infrastructure in place to allow the raw materials there to be refined into more finished products? No and its hard to see how that could happen. I think the reasonable thing would be to imagine small industrial areas like Pretoria with railway network linking them. Mainly grassland and farmland in between. When you find raw material e.g. gold at Witwatersand you get a town/city like Johannesburg.

Relationship between Italy and EAS is extremely friendly. Ethiopia is ruled by Emporer Haile Selassie but there is considerable Italian influence in the government and has been considerable Italian involvement with infrastructure, most notably building two ports and a railway link Massawa, Asmara, Addis. Industry is mainly farming on corrals, extraction of materials like Sulphur, salt, gold, copper, zinc, some oil and gas, iron ore, bauxite and sand. Militarily the army is pretty much indigenous, starting to integrate and have more training with RE. Air force is none, only Italian units over there. Navy has 3 ships with mixed crew. Cruiser Ras Dejen is used as a training cadet ship with Italian command.

In reality, think of Ethiopia as a state of Italy with massively devolved power like Libya. Libya has two local parliaments at Tripoli and Benghazi with heavy involvement of the locals population. Libya has oil and sand, oil being discovered in 1921/22 and production being brought up to standard by about 29/30 with help from Iberia and Royal Dutch & Shell. This is serving to prop up the Italian economy a bit.
